How much wet and dry food should my 8lb cat eat to lose weight?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

I recently adopted a 2-yr-old DLH tortie who weighs 8lbs and is being given a mixed diet of wet and dry food. She was treated for giardia after her first vet visit (hopefully cured?), so I am unsure about what is a 'normal' amount of food for her to eat - all the vet said was that she could probably stand to lose a little weight. Is there a good benchmark I can use for feeding? I have been giving her 1/2 cup of dry food and about 3oz of wet food, but she only eats half her wet food, if that.

Hi and thanks for posting!

For Easel who is a spayed adult cat, she'll need about 220-250 calories a day to maintain her current weight and between 180-200 if she needs to lose weight. Every food can and product bag contain the calories per cup or calories per can on the label which you can use to adjust her cups per day accordingly.

I hope this helps!
