When can my horse safely go from box rest to turnout after a wound?

Pet's info: Farm Animal | Horse | Male | neutered | 11 years old

How long should I keep my horse on box rest? He came in from field on Sunday with a puncture wound. Wound was treated by vet on Monday morning and he finishes course of antibiotics ( Trimediazine) today. Wound was about 3/4 inch deep and was clean. Vet flushed wound and applied Intragel. I have been flushing with saline solution and Applying Flamazine cream twice daily since Monday. Wound is starring to form scab around edges. Is it safe to turn out now or should I keep him on box rest longer

As long as the wound appears to be healing, he should be fine to return to pasture. Please continue to monitor the wound daily for any evidence of swelling or drainage. If you observe either, please contact your veterinarian.

Keeping it clean and fresh is the only option left at this stage. Bandages would need to be changed daily if infected or every 3-5 days if clean and dry. It is not recommended to cast or enclose dirty/infected/wet wounds as this can lead to further complications and even the loss of the foot. Hello. As long as there is very little grass where you let her out, she is better off being able to move around then being stalled up. If the grass does come up, you will need to severely limit her time on pasture to just an hour or so in the afternoons, or turn her out with a grazing muzzle. I recommend wrapping the leg to keep it clean and prevent her from licking it. While honey promotes healing and I do use it in some of my wounds, I would advise you to also consult the veterinarian that initially treated Holly.

My horse has a bad wound with dried blood. What should I do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Hunter. You're right that some of that may just be dried up blood. What needs to be addressed is the the size of the wound where that blood came from. The biggest concern is for an infection. The wound needs to be cleaned and thoroughly examined by your veterinarian and decide what the next step in treatment should be. I would recommend calling your vet out so that they can clean the wound and evaluate it. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My horse's leg wound isn't healing completely. Should I call a vet?

It does look OK overall but the part that’s not healing is due to proud flesh growth (excessive granulation tissue). Usually the proud flesh needs to be trimmed off to get it to heal and the vet can give you something to put on it to keep the proud flesh down until it heals completely. Dog's e-collar off, wound exposed. Should I take him to the vet?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If you can keep the E-collar or onesie on him to prevent him from licking it should heal up just fine. Leave the E-collar/onesie on for at least 7-10 days. You do not need to apply anything to the incision; just leave it be. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
