My horse has a bad wound with dried blood. What should I do?

It does look OK overall but the part that’s not healing is due to proud flesh growth (excessive granulation tissue). Usually the proud flesh needs to be trimmed off to get it to heal and the vet can give you something to put on it to keep the proud flesh down until it heals completely. Hello there. Unfortunately, Lottie's foot lesion appears to have some necrotic (dead) tissue that is likely going to prevent it from healing. Since it has been open so long, it's unlikely that stitches could be put in safely without a drain as there is probably too much bacteria and debris inside to close it up without causing an abscess. I highly recommend contacting a large animal or equine vet to come take a look at it as it may need to be debrided under anesthesia (the necrotic tissue may need to be removed in order for it to heal well). This is very important for your horse's health. I'm glad that you've been cleaning it with iodine, but with how deep the cut is, I also worry about bacteria deep inside the wound that could potentially cause septicemia (an infection of the blood), which could be deadly. I would definitely have Wambat seen by a vet for this. He could has suffered some trauma to his penis, he could have a mass or tumor in his sheath or on his penis that has become ulcerated and is now bleeding, it could be due to irritation from a build up of old secretions and dirt, or he could have a tear in his urethra causing blood to drip out of his penis and pool in the sheath. As long as he is eating and drinking normally, urinating normally, and otherwise acting normally, this isn't a medical emergency and you don't need to rush out an equine vet right away. That being said, I would have him seen for this in the next day or two so the cause of the bleeding can be diagnosed and treated.

Ideally, Horus should be examined by your veterinarian. Vetericyn, while a good product for minor wounds, may not be enough for a serious injury. He may need systemic antibiotics which your vet can administer or dispense after an exam. Pain management should also be discussed.

It would be best to have a vet come out and take a look at the wound to properly clean it and prescribe any antibiotics or medications to help it heal. If the horse is not yours, you will need to get into contact with the owner first as it is their responsibility to care for the horse, and there can be legal issues around attempting to care for an animal that is not yours. If the owner refuses to provide care and you feel the horse is suffering, contacting your local animal control or animal shelter for assistance is best.

This presentation could be due to a trauma (bite wound) and/ or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be continued at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (twice daily). I would recommend to shave fur around the wound (clippers are best as if you do it with scissors you may injury him) to be able to clean the area best as possible. After cleaning you can dry it up and apply any cream containing zinc oxide (like sudocream). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking.
