Is Hills Hairball Control food safe for all my cats, young and old?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 7 years old | 8.8 lbs

Hi. I have 4 cats: a 1 year old, two 3 year old's and one 8 year old. Ive been advised to change from Hills Optimal Care to Hills Hairball Control since the 8 year old and 3 year old suffer from excessive hairballs & vomiting. We want to buy the same food for all of them due to better prices and they eat together at 1 food station. My questions are: Will the Hairball Control food be OK for the cats who do not experience vomiting? Also: The food is ages 1-6, will it be OK for my 8 year old cat?

There is no reason why the younger cats can not have this food. Young adult (1-6) is suitable for all adult cats but annual monitoring of urine and body condition in cats over 6 is recommended to monitor kidney function, changes in which may necessitate changes to a mature/senior range

As they are all different ages, but adults, I would leave out a good quality adult dry cat food such as iams. You could get hills or royal canin but it is expensive. If you want you could supplement this with some wet food daily.

Is it safe for all my cats to eat the hyperthyroid prescription food?

If you are feeding Hill's y/d diet, then yes, you can give it to all the cats. The cats that are not hyperthyroid though need iodine supplementation since the y/d diet is an iodine-restricted diet. This is VERY important. It is recommended that you take those healthy cats aside once a day and feed them a tablespoon (per cat) of regular canned cat food to increase their iodine intake. My kitten keeps eating adult cat Rx food. Is that safe for her?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It should be no problem for Kaya to eat the C/D. In fact, in households with one cat who has urinary problems and another who does not, I often recommend feeding the c/d to everyone anyway since I don't want the urinary cat to eat anyone else's food. (That being said, if urinary cat will stay our of Kaya's food, a kitten food IS more ideal for Kaya for the next couple months at least.) Best wishes to you and your kitties!

Can my cat eat hairball control dry food daily if she has no hairballs?

Yes, depending on the food. Most of the brands that claim to have efficacy against hairballs have some kind of formulation that has added fiber designed to help hairballs to pass. Some foods are more effective than others at this (stick to Science Diet, Royal Canin, or Purina for over-the-counter non-prescription diets). These are not usually prescription diets and are almost always ok to feed as a maintenance diet to normal, healthy cats.

Is hairball food safe for my overweight cat with no hairball issues?

There is no reason why he shouldn't eat a hairball formula, these tend to contain increased fiber to improve bowel mobility and this sounds like a good fit. Change food slowly over 7-10days to prevent upset
