Why is my 10-month-old female cat screaming and wanting outside?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Starting her heat cycle in a unspayed female cat is the most common reason for increased vocalization. Other possible causes are: she sees other cats outside (territorial), anxiety (cats outside, starting heat, changes to house hold), attention seeking, or medical issue. I would close the blinds temporarily, provide environmental enrichment (cat trees, interactive cat toys, lazer pointer, play with her) and consider spaying her. You can also consider a Vet exam to be sure it isn't a medical condition. If she is otherwise fine, I hope that is improves with time and some of the above. Have a great day!

It sounds as though Lucy is likely in heat. Unspayed female cats go into heat fairly frequently through the spring and summer months. During this time they often vocalize loudly, display behavioral changes and sometimes have a noticeable vaginal discharge. During this time, be sure to keep Lucy inside and away from any intact male cats, or schedule an appointment to have her spayed to avoid any unwanted pregnancies.

It sounds like a stressful time at your house. I’m so sorry to hear about your mom. It is very common for cats to want to explore their surroundings. This is especially true of in tact animals. Often, neutering a cat will make him less interested in escape. The crying and trying to escape will also be much worse if there is a female in heat anywhere in your neighborhood. If this is the case, It will not stop until her is neutered or the female cat leaves. If it’s really important that Lumi stay in your room, try making your room appealing by adding a cat tower or high shelf for him to climb up to, fun toys, a scratching post, or an indoor cat garden (potted edible plants that are safe for cats to eat). I would get Snowy spayed. The reason why she wants out of the house so much is that she wants to mate with male cats. The only way to stop this behavior is to have her spayed, so I would speak with a vet about having this done as soon as possible.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My guess is that he is reaching sexual maturity at almost 6 months and he is intact. If there are intact female cats outside as well he is likely sensing them. I would consider neutering him to reduce the kitten population. If he is eating, drinking and otherwise fine then that is most likely the cause. Have a good day!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would encourage you to enrich his environment inside by adding toys, scratch pads and other things that he can find interesting. I also really like a product called Feliway which helps to make cats feel more at ease in their environment. This is something you can easily get from your pet store or online.
