Why is my young female cat crying with discharge? Is she in heat?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 14 days old | 5.51 lbs

My cat is 5-6 months old. She’s having vaginal discharges and emitting sounds as if she’s on pain. What should I do, and what could the possible case be?

It sounds as though Lucy is likely in heat. Unspayed female cats go into heat fairly frequently through the spring and summer months. During this time they often vocalize loudly, display behavioral changes and sometimes have a noticeable vaginal discharge. During this time, be sure to keep Lucy inside and away from any intact male cats, or schedule an appointment to have her spayed to avoid any unwanted pregnancies.
