Can I feed my small cat small portions multiple times each day?

This is a great question! I see that Oliver is a kitten so it's not recommended to limit food since he is still growing, but it's fine to put him on a feeding schedule. On his bag of kitten food, there will be a daily recommended amount to feed him. Take that amount and divide it into two equal portions, one to feed in the morning and one to feed in the evening. Some cats can become obsessed with food, eating or even the ritual of feeding. It is very important to not allow Jinx to get heavy. In the wild cats eat 9-16 times a day so smaller, more frequent feedings are good. You could also get an automatic feeder, this can not only help to regulate how much she eats but it can help to transfer some of her feelings about her food bowl to the feeder. Hello. Just for convenience, most folks just leave a bowl of food out for cats to graze on throughout the day. But if Maximus is overweight, or trending toward being overweight, you will need to control the amount of food he consumes in a day or place him on a metabolic weight control diet. As I see it, cats seem to get hungry, 10 minutes after I turn off the light for bed, so having some available will help me sleep all night. If Maximus is more considerate, & you do not mind feeding when he asks for food, you can certainly do this. Ideally, I would calculate the proper amount he needs daily based on what your bag of food recommends & divide this into 3 feedings, morning, noon or early evening, & the remaining amount for snacking overnight. Remember, if you are feeding for an ideal weight, or for Maximus to lose a little weight you will feed for that weight. In other words, follow the food amount recommendations for a 10 or 12-pound cat if he needs to lose a couple of pounds. Just divide the total daily amount into 3 separate meals. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luna. First off, is she at a healthy weight and fairly active? Or do you feel she is sedentary and may be prone to weight gain? If she is lean, you can feed up to 3/4 cup per day. I would sprinkle small amounts of this pre-measured amount into her dish throughout the day to encourage her graze and not finish it all at once. You can also take kibble from this pre-measured amount and hide pieces around the house. This encourages a cat's normal hunting behavior. If you place kibble on high surfaces she will have to jump. This gives her extra exercise. Change up the hiding places to keep her engaged. If she is overweight, then I would only feed 1/2 cup per day. I hope this information helps!
