Should I free-feed my cat or feed them multiple times a day?

Hello. Just for convenience, most folks just leave a bowl of food out for cats to graze on throughout the day. But if Maximus is overweight, or trending toward being overweight, you will need to control the amount of food he consumes in a day or place him on a metabolic weight control diet. As I see it, cats seem to get hungry, 10 minutes after I turn off the light for bed, so having some available will help me sleep all night. If Maximus is more considerate, & you do not mind feeding when he asks for food, you can certainly do this. Ideally, I would calculate the proper amount he needs daily based on what your bag of food recommends & divide this into 3 feedings, morning, noon or early evening, & the remaining amount for snacking overnight. Remember, if you are feeding for an ideal weight, or for Maximus to lose a little weight you will feed for that weight. In other words, follow the food amount recommendations for a 10 or 12-pound cat if he needs to lose a couple of pounds. Just divide the total daily amount into 3 separate meals. Since Oliver is so small, then yes you can feed him a small handful three times a day. Cats enjoy nibbling throughout the day anyways so a good way to feed them if to pre-measure their total amount of food for the day and give them just a portion of it several times a day. This way they aren’t over eating but they feel like they are getting fed multiple times a day. I hope This helps!

Divide the daily allotment into two equal portions. Put their food down in the morning in separate rooms so they can't eat each other's food. Leave the food down for 30 minutes, giving them a chance to eat. After that time, pick the food up. Feed them again in the evening, again giving them 30 minutes to eat. They will learn to eat at those allotted times. Best of luck.

You can free feed. By that, I mean leave her kitten food out all day, and she can nibble when she likes. Her kitten food will have the feeding instructions on the bag, so give her the daily recommended allotment. I hope this helps!

Great question! You have two options with feeding Uli. There will be a daily allotment of food to be fed on her food bag, and you can either leave the food out all day for her to eat whenever she wants, or you can divide it up into two equal portions. Give one of the portions in the morning and one at night. At her age, she should still be on a kitten formulated food. Once she is 12 months of age, you can switch her to an adult food. I typically recommend feeding meals twice daily, although you could feed smaller meals more frequently during the day. Some people will hide bowls in different areas of the house with the day's kibble in them to simulate hunting for indoor cats - obvious this only works in single cat households.

The best plan would be to weigh your cat and use the info on the packets to work out her daily intake if she was on just try or just wet food. If you give her half of the wet amount and half of the dry it will work out as a daily ration. I would leave the dry out for her then feed the wet nice and fresh once or twice a day.
