My kitten meows for food. Should I feed her smaller, more frequent meals?

Hello, in general kittens this young can be fed whenever they feel hungry. During this time they are growing quite quickly and nurse every 2-3 hours. He may be feeling hungry often because he isn't consuming as much food during his feeding times. If he is on formula ensure you are feeding the recommended amounts, but he can also have more formula if he wants it. Additionally, you may start introducing a little wet food now to see if this helps him feel more full. Alternatively, he may not be meowing because he is hungry, but rather because he wants attention. You can try playing with him or offering toys to see if this calms his meowing. I can understand your dilemma here. You can try offering her 1/4 cup 3 times a day and see if his curbs her hunger. The food recommendations on the bag are more like guidelines. I would also recommend weaning her off the milk over the next week, because she is old enough where she doesn’t need it after 6 weeks of age. :D She is training you to get more food! Lots of cats have no hunger off switch and they will eat until they are utterly stuffed. Depending on her weight and the particular food, two cans per day may be the recommended feeding amount, and any more than that could cause obesity.

Your cat is still growing and may need more food than you are giving her. At this age she should get approximately 1 1/2 cans of cat food a day split into three feeds. That is approximately 8 oz of good quality wet (canned) food. Some cats need a lot of attention and lovings and petting, and if they do not get it, they will ask for food. So set aside time for playing with your cat, and talk to her or touch her every time you walk past her.

I would recommend getting a ball that dispenses treats or a different treat dispenser. I would put Malsey's meals in this and then let her work for her food. Then you can give her the wet food as a treat. That way she has all day to work for it and maybe it will stop the meowing for food since there will probably still be more in the dispesnser. A good solution that works for me is to put your cat on a light calorie diet without restricting the quantity, most cats won't get overweight this way and they will remain happy as their food bowl will always be full.

If her belly seems very full and hard, she may be overeating and getting too much food at one time. Kittens also can have a round belly appearance from having intestinal parasites. I would recommend to take a fecal sample to her first veterinary visit when you schedule one so they can check her for parasites. Ideally you want the sample to be the same day as her appointment. Kittens do much better if they can eat small, frequent meals rather then two larger meals per day. This is because their stomachs are small and cannot hold a large amount of food at one time. If you can feed her 3-4 times/day 1/4 can of kitten wet food or 2-3 tbspns of dry food, this is better than two larger meals and easier for her to digest.
