How to get my adopted cat to groom herself? Or should I bathe her?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 4 months old | 8 lbs

I adopted a 4-year old street cat. She does not know how to groom herself. Can a cat be taught to groom itself, or will I have to resort to bathing it?

Congrats on your new cat! Cats typically do know how to groom themselves, and Piper will do it when she needs to. There's really no way to teach a cat to groom itself, so it you are concerned that she is getting too dirty, you can give her a bath. Do not bathe her daily as that will strip her skin of it's natural oils and dry it out. I would only bathe her if she gets really dirty.
