How to get my adopted cat to groom herself? Or should I bathe her?

Cats typically don't need baths as they don't get very dirty, but if he's getting better about cleaning, there's nothing you need to do. He will clean himself as needed, and if you feel he needs a little extra help with it, it's fine to give him a bath :-)

Cats generally do not require bathes because they are so great about cleaning and grooming themselvs. Their nails naturally shed every 6-8 weeks and having them clipped actually leads to scratching because they want to make them sharp. As far as hair trimmed, that is personal preference for you. Try to brush her daily to get her used to it so there will be no tangles or mats. IF a mat does develop, then she will it cut out by the groomer. Her teeth should be brushed at least 3 times a week if able and you can do this at home with finger tooth brush and feline approved tooth past to help.

I do not recommend bathing him, if his coat seems to be dirty and sticky all the time, that is probably because he is suffering from a gum disease, this creates a very slimy saliva and when the cat cleans himself it sticks to the coat and creates a very dirty looking coat, in that case he will need to be treated for that but bathing a cat is rarely a solution unless the cat becomes extremely dirty once in a while, bathing a cat once a week is not an option.

Hi, in general cats are very clean animals and they do take care of themselves so you should not bathe them. If you really wanted to bathe them you could get them used to it and bathe them once every 6 months. Hope this helps !

If you don’t think they will let you bathe them, than I would recommend a few things. Use a warm wet wash cloth to wipe them down a few times Today. Also, next time you are running errands stop by a Pet supply store and purchase some of the dry shampoo. This can be really helpful. It could be that your cat never learned to clean herself as a kitten, or just doesn't realize she has stuff stuck to her fur. Longer haired cats can also get things stuck easily. Keeping the area trimmed and wiping down her bottom with a pet wipe or baby wipe can help keep her cleaner.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. They are still very young kittens, it is normal that they clean only their faces and paws. They will learn and start cleaning themselves properly in the next few weeks. I don't think there is anything you can do about it and there is no way you can teach them how to clean themselves.
