Cat grooming: How often to bathe, trim nails, and brush teeth?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If a kitten is at least 8 weeks of age, you can begin bathing it. I see Ginger is 8 weeks old so that she would be old enough to start getting bathed. I would not use any human grade shampoos and conditioners though. I would use a veterinary shampoo only for use in animals. You shouldn't nees to bathe Ginger often though and even now, unless she is very dirty, I wouldn't worry too much about getting her bathed. Hi there! It is always best to feed them twice daily. You just have to split the daily amount of food in two feedings. How often you bathe Zuri will depend on many factors such as if she is indoors or outdoors and how often she grooms herself. As a general rule it should be every 1-2 months though will depend on that. You want to brush Zuri 2-3 times a week given she is a shorthair breed. Good luck!

Sounds like a good start! I would recommend brushing her teeth rather than giving dental treats if Luna wil tolerate it. Start slow and gradually acclimate her to a small cat toothbrush or finger brush with some enzymatic toothpaste. Many cats never need to be bathed, but getting her used to being brushed is also a good idea.

Frequent brushing may decrease the amount of shedding. Fleas can be treated with a topical preventative such as Frontline or Revolution. You can purchase these from your veterinarian. Use a topical or oral flea preventative for at least 3 consecutive months, preferably year round. An oral medication such as Capstar can quickly kill any adult fleas on your cat. Again, purchase this from your vet. You will also need to treat the environment. This includes vacuuming everywhere your cat goes and washing all bedding. Follow up with an area treatment (flea bomb) to prevent reinfestation. Cays usually keep themselves very clean and don't require bathing more than once every 6-8 weeks if not longer. If your cat is not grooming regularly, have him examined by your vet to diagnose illness or injury as either can commonly cause a change in behavior or grooming habits.

Hi, in general cats are very clean animals and they do take care of themselves so you should not bathe them. If you really wanted to bathe them you could get them used to it and bathe them once every 6 months. Hope this helps !

Hi and thanks for your question! You may buy nail small clippers found at your local pet supplies store to trim your cat's nails. If your cat is indoors, you may need to trim the nails every 8 weeks or so. You may ask your veterinarian to show you the proper way to do this. Outdoor cats do not need their nails trimmed very often is at all. Being outside and walking on ground and pavement helps to trim them down on their own. Alternatively, having cat scratch posts around your home if your cat is an indoor cat, can help to trim down their nails naturally. I hope this has helped!

Congrats on your new cat! Cats typically do know how to groom themselves, and Piper will do it when she needs to. There's really no way to teach a cat to groom itself, so it you are concerned that she is getting too dirty, you can give her a bath. Do not bathe her daily as that will strip her skin of it's natural oils and dry it out. I would only bathe her if she gets really dirty.
