My cats aren't cleaning their whole bodies. Can I teach them?

It could be that your cat never learned to clean herself as a kitten, or just doesn't realize she has stuff stuck to her fur. Longer haired cats can also get things stuck easily. Keeping the area trimmed and wiping down her bottom with a pet wipe or baby wipe can help keep her cleaner.

Cats typically don't need baths as they don't get very dirty, but if he's getting better about cleaning, there's nothing you need to do. He will clean himself as needed, and if you feel he needs a little extra help with it, it's fine to give him a bath :-)

Most kittens will outgrow this messy phase. Adult cats tend to be very clean animals. You may try a different type of litter to see if that helps with the mess or even try something like an automatic litter box. This is hard to do. He probably never learned to clean himself or he is so disgusted by his own poop that he does not want to clean it up. 1) his box needs to be cleaned everyday 2) you can put some hairball remedy on his paws so he is enticed to clean that off, then put some on his fur further back until you can put it on his bum. He may get the idea. 3) wipe his bum and feet with clean wipes. He apparently also never learned to cover his poop. This unfortunately happens when the kittens are taken away from mommy way too early, as their mom actually teaches them all that.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Now is a perfect time! Digging and using a litter box is natural to them. Make sure it isn't deep or too high for them to jump in and out of. You can put a little used litter in there (smell of urine and poop) to encourage them to use it. Kittens are very quick to learn. Put them in the box every few hours. I hope this helps!
