My adopted cats' coats smell terrible. What can I do to clean them?

Try bathing him in a gentle pet or baby shampoo, but make sure to dry him well after his bath so that he does not get too cold. Also wash all of his bedding well because he likely transferred the odor by contact.

I do not recommend bathing him, if his coat seems to be dirty and sticky all the time, that is probably because he is suffering from a gum disease, this creates a very slimy saliva and when the cat cleans himself it sticks to the coat and creates a very dirty looking coat, in that case he will need to be treated for that but bathing a cat is rarely a solution unless the cat becomes extremely dirty once in a while, bathing a cat once a week is not an option.

That is unusual. The odor could be coming from his mouth, his skin or his rectum. Bad odors from the mouth can indicate dental disease, ketosis or kidney disease. Odors from the rectum (worse than normal), could indicate a gassy tummy, diarrhea or dietary intolerance. Smelly skin generally indicates an infection or over active oil glands. With the borderline liver disease, his diet options may be somewhat limited. I recommend to ask about food recommendations as the doctor may want a special diet due to the liver. The skin quality may improve by giving Boo an omega 3 fatty acid supplement. Certain food are also better for skin such as Royal Canin or Nutro (once again though, ask your vet about diet recommendations). Lastly, you can use a dry shampoo for cats in between bathing. The contact time of 10 minutes is very important!! Do this every 2-3 days until the smell is gone and he is back to normal. If he is affected by dental disease, his breathe will have a very foul odor. This could be what you are smelling. Anal gland secretions have a fishy smell. Kitties can be so naughty post surgery. Although it is not advised to do a full body bath, you can use a waterless shampoo and kitten wipes from your local pet store to get him clean. As long as the inicision site itself stays dry you are ok. Best of luck keeping kitty clean! : ) Take care.

Congrats on your new cat! Cats typically do know how to groom themselves, and Piper will do it when she needs to. There's really no way to teach a cat to groom itself, so it you are concerned that she is getting too dirty, you can give her a bath. Do not bathe her daily as that will strip her skin of it's natural oils and dry it out. I would only bathe her if she gets really dirty.
