Why does my dog poop in her crate when traveling? How to prevent it?

Khloe is very young and will likely grow out of this. It sounds like she is very nervous in the car. You can try to get her acclimated to the car by just hanging out with her a little bit at home while parked and giving her lots of living and positive reinforcement. Then gradually move up to short rides around the block. This may help with her anxiety. I hope this helps!

If the crate training isn't working, you may need to switch to using a room such as a gated off kitchen or laundry room to see if it stops the problem. If that's the case, Belle may have some aversion to the crate itself, causing her to stress and defecate and then lay in it. Taking her out every 1-2 hours, if possible may also help if she still can't hold it long enough. As for eating it, products such as For-bid can be added to the food to make her stools less palatable. Speaking with a local trainer or veterinary behaviorist if she checked out healthy and is still having issues may also help.

I recommend first to have Kiki examined by the veterinarian to have her stool checked for bacterial over growth or parasites. If she is experiencing inflammation in her gut, this could speed up the GI transit time meaning she will need to go to the bathroom. If no medical cause can be found, I recommend to feed the brand Royal Canin because it tends to be a low residue diet (as long as it is not the 'diet' formula) and pets who eat this diet tend to produce less stool. I would also switch her to twice a daily feeding (6pm latest) and make sure she has an evening bowel movement before bed. This will help to not make her have a BM in the middle of the night. Travelling is always a stress on the system. Try to increase fluid intake & make sure she gets plenty of exercise while you are travelling. We often advise feeding canned pumpkin , 1- 2 tablespoons twice a day to help move the bowels. As long as she is not vomiting, try feeding her some special treats like some chicken or cooked hamburger. It sounds like Eli isn't fully potty trained yet. I recommend using the basics. 1) have a set daily schedule. As soon as you wake up take her out, as soon as she's done eating, as soon as she's done playing, and before she goes to bed. 2) meal feeding- this helps determine when she needs to potty. What goes in will push the stool out usually within 15-30 minutes. 3) Use a lot of praise when Eli goes potty outside. Lastly, I recommend making the space within her crate smaller, either by buying a smaller crate or blocking off the back end so she only has enough space to stand up and turn around. If she has enough room to poop in one corner and sleep in another, she will have a hard time separating her bathroom from her den. Good luck and kisses to Eli!

This can be a sign of a medical illness, like diarrhea. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, Rocky will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Since it sounds like this is a recent behavior change for Luca, I would be concerned that he may have a medical problem of some kind causing him to have trouble controlling his bowel movements - so the first step would be to have him checked by a vet. He/she can do a fecal exam as well as other testing if needed to check for any problems. If his exam and lab work is all normal, then it may take a bit more detective work to figure out what is causing this behavior. If it only happens when you're not home, then I would be very suspicious that he may have separation anxiety - this is a very common cause of accidents in the crate when owners are not home. You can try videotaping him one day while you go out if you want to know for sure if this is the problem. If so, he may need prescription anti-anxiety medication to help keep him from becoming so upset - this would be something to discuss with your vet if you suspect that this may be the issue.
