How can I accurately determine the age of a recently found kitten?

I found a kitten 13 days ago she looked like she was 1-2 weeks old I couldn’t tell. She had a severe eye infection 3 days ago her eyes changed and looked completely destroyed I will take her to the vet also yesterday she peed on her own. I just wanted to ask how can I tell how old is she?

Hi there.

You can age kittens by looking at their incisor teeth, these erupt at certain ages. Your veterinarian can also help you age your kitten based on the teeth.

Oh, sweet kitty! Its hard to tell if her eyes are open in the picture and hard to get perspective on her size. But I can tell you that if her eyes are still closed, she's probably less than 2 weeks old (usually their eyes open at about 8-14 days). Baby teeth start coming in at about 3 weeks old. So if her eyes are open and there are no baby teeth yet, she's probably somewhere around 2-3 weeks. If she's got a full mouth of baby teeth, she's probably about 6 weeks.

Wow....you did a great job getting the second set of photos. I agree with the answer below....there are no adult teeth yet, but these kitties are pretty big. I would guess 12 weeks or 3 months. You should start to see some adult teeth coming in soon...the top two "front teeth" will come in first at 14 weeks or so.

At 4.5 months old Jasmine has already started loosing baby teeth and getting adult teeth. It starts with their tiny incisors around three and a half or 4 months, and finishes with the four canine teeth at around 6 months. Just got a kitten, how do I tell its age and determine its sex?

The general rule of thumb is about 1 month of age for each pound of weight. This is not accurate in all cases though. Baby teeth, incisors and canines (fangs), erupt at about 3-4 weeks of age. If Lucy has all her baby teeth, she is at least 6 weeks old. You should be able to determine sex right away. This is how: Lift the tail. Right under the tail is the anus. Below that is another opening which is round in males and a vertical slit in females. Also, the distance between the anus and genital opening is greater in males. A physical exam by your vet can confirm gender. You can also post a clear picture of the back end in a new question and we can let you know.

Hi there. It would help us to see a picture of your cat, but to be semi accurate we would need to do a pretty good dental exam (examine the teeth). This is really best done in person as it is hard to photograph the mouth of a cat accurately.

The pictures become blurry when enlarge them but this looks like a kitten approximately 8 to 12 weeks of age. When your cat goes to a veterinarian for the first shots and to be dewormed they will be able to take a closer look and give you an exact age.
