My cat is yelping in pain, hiding, and won't eat. What's wrong?

It sounds as though Rosemary is in pain. It is difficult to say for sure where since I cannot examine her. It is hard to say exactly what may be occurring sight unseen, but I can certainly offer a couple possibilities. Exhibiting odd behavior randomly as you described can certainly be a sign of a neurological dysfunction occurring in the brain. Sometimes a psychomotor seizure can cause the occurrence of random odd behavior such as vocalizing, exhibiting fear or aggression, etc. These episodes may last a min or so but pet's with psychomotor seizures always do the same thing each time. A postictal period after the seizure may induce hunger, thirst, or a general unwell feeling prompting her to want to be by your side for comfort. A brain tumor could cause the onset of seizures. There are other possibility as well that may explain her behavior. Pain, renal disease, liver disease, or other internal organ dysfunction may contribute. An thorough veterinary exam can help diagnose Spotty as well as basic blood work and perhaps some imaging like an x-ray or ultrasound. I hope this has helped and all the best to you and Spotty!

I recommend that you take your pet to your local veterinarian for an examination and blood work. There are numerous reasons an animal may have pain in the lower part of her body, including kidney infection/stones, degenerative disc disease, spains/strains, osteoarthritis, or trauma, etc. Often, lack of eating is a sign of pain or distress. Once your pet's source of pain/discomfort is diagnosed and treated, you pet will be more likely to eat again.

Cats are SOOO good at hiding pain. I rarely find a cat will be obvious about the source of pain. The fact that she is moving slowly and carefully tells me that she does hurt, but she is hiding it. I recommend taking Shy to a veterinarian for a thorough exam. They might be able to localize the pain to a limb which is making her not want to move, or to her abdomen which causes her to lie down more. Young cats are very susceptible to foreign objects- weird things that they have eaten and get stuck in their intestines. Young cats are also susceptible to trauma especially if they are allowed outdoor. The vet will localize where the problem is and recommend blood work or x-rays for diagnostics. It certainly sounds as though Grey is not feeling well! Inappetance, hiding and vocalization can indicate a number of underlying conditions, but hyperthyroidism is at the top of the list. I recommend taking Grey to her vet for an exam and lab testing (CBC, chemistry, T4/thyroid hormone, urinalysis) to get to the bottom of things. Cats can develop hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) when the stop eating, so her condition is fairly urgent.

Poor Minx. It definitely sounds like she is either in pain or just not feeling well. There are several things that can cause these symptoms from a hurt neck or spine, pain elsewhere, an abscess, toxins, liver or kidney issues and much more. I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to do a fecal, blood work and even x-rays if needed to help determine the cause and get her started on the proper meds to help her feel better. I hope this helps!
