My cat has white worms in his poop and is eating less. Are treatments safe?

If you are seeing worms that look like rice, those are tapeworm segments. Panacur can kill some types of tapeworm, but the best drug for it is praziquantel. That is a prescription only drug, and a great brand that contains praziquantel is Drontal. You can try the Panacur, but you may have to go back to your vet to get Drontal. As long as you practice good hygiene (wash your hands after petting him, wash your hands after cleaning his litter box), you should be fine. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately, I am unable to prescribe medication for Coco without having examined her. However, your veterinarian can quickly determine the exact type of parasites present with a fecal sample and prescribe the appropriate treatment. Because many parasites are transmitted by fleas, it is important for Coco to be on a monthly flea preventative. You should also be careful when cleaning out her litter box to make sure you wash your hands well with soap and water, as some of these parasites can infect humans. I hope all is well!

Yes, Casper could have worms and it could be tapeworms which are not treated by panacur. Tapeworms require praziquantel to kill, which is available by prescription only from the vet. Kittens need to be dewormed every month until they are six months of age, and it could be that Casper has a heavy burden of worms and needs another deworming treatment now. Once he reaches six months of age, he should be dewormed every three months. I would take him and a sample of his feces into the vet so the vet can treat him.

Medications for round worms can be found as well in any pet shops. Unfortunately they are not that effective as the ones on prescription. Urinary problems must be checked by your veterinarian as if controlled the infection/inflammation probably won't resolve by itself. Having said that, a lot of urinary tract problems are related to stress, so often there is are ''stressors'' that can be controlled in cat's environment. I am a little concerned about many over-the-counter deworming products as they are often not effective and sometimes even cause some toxicity issues. I recommend a full exam for these kittens by your veterinarian, and a product like pyrantel as a dewomer because it is safe and effective for kittens. This way your vet can see if there is something physically wrong with the kitten that is having trouble passing stools.

If you think you overdosed them, I would call your vet or see if there is a 1800 number on the package - those are often helpful! As far as seeing worms- sometimes you do see worms but other times they get digested and you see diarrhea - which may be part of the reason their stools are soft now. I hope this helps!
