My cat has white worms & rice-like pieces. Will Panacur work?

Pet's info: Cat | Egyptian Mau | Male | neutered | 9 lbs

My male cat was taken to a clinic on Monday to get neutered. They game him a de worming treatment - I believe it was called revolution. Now he is having little white worms coming out of his butt randomly and they are alive. I also saw white worms in his stool. When I look at his bedding area.... there are little (almost yellow-orange) pieces of “rice” not alive on the blanket. The clinic gave me panacur... will that work? I’m very concerned about hygiene around here. can I be infected?

If you are seeing worms that look like rice, those are tapeworm segments. Panacur can kill some types of tapeworm, but the best drug for it is praziquantel. That is a prescription only drug, and a great brand that contains praziquantel is Drontal. You can try the Panacur, but you may have to go back to your vet to get Drontal. As long as you practice good hygiene (wash your hands after petting him, wash your hands after cleaning his litter box), you should be fine. I hope this helps!

Yes, Casper could have worms and it could be tapeworms which are not treated by panacur. Tapeworms require praziquantel to kill, which is available by prescription only from the vet. Kittens need to be dewormed every month until they are six months of age, and it could be that Casper has a heavy burden of worms and needs another deworming treatment now. Once he reaches six months of age, he should be dewormed every three months. I would take him and a sample of his feces into the vet so the vet can treat him.

Hello. Yes, those look like dried tapeworm segments. The DE works to desiccate the tapeworm larvae present in the environment. It is not fed to your cat. I would ask your veterinarian to prescribe the medication praziquantel, as this is the best way to deworm Lion for the tapeworms. Keeping fleas off of him, & not allowing him to hunt, will prevent a reinfestation of this parasite, but he can be retreated as necessary in the future. Thank you.

My cat has worms in poop. Is her dewormer working for tapeworms?

From the picture these look to be tapeworm segments. Often you will see them dried on the rear end too. Pyrantel is a great broad spectrum dewormer, but it doesn’t kill tapeworm. Droncit ( praziquantel) kills tapeworm. I always recommend a full fecal exam looking for microscopic eggs as animals who have parasites often have more than one kind. My cat has loose stools and rice-shaped worms. Does he need meds?

Yes, I would advise to get Phones dewormed. Rice shaped worms are usually tape worms BUT I have seen clients describe roundworms as rice shaped as well. I would advise a broad spectrum dewormer and a fecal exam. If he does have tapeworms, then that means he also has fleas. Fleas transmit the tapeworms. You veterinarian can prescribe the best flea medications and dewormer for your situation. If the diarrhea does not resolve after treatment, then there are many other things that can cause loose stool. I hoe this helps!

Depending on the type of worms, many very easily available treatment options efficiently treat these type of infections. Side effects can be present in very rare cases, but nothing that can lead to death as far as I am aware. Panacur for example is an excellent product that can treat most common gastrointestinal parasitic infections. My cat vomited a roundworm. Should I use Panacur? How often to deworm?

Hi Jo! I'm sorry Billie is quite sick! If she is vomiting worms, it sounds like she has a heavy burden of them, and I would give her a dose of Panacur now. I highly recommend Panacur, it's a great deworming treatment. I would give her another dose in two weeks, then deworm her after another month, then every three months from there. Make sure all the pets in your home are up to date on their deworming treatments as well, as they can pass them back and forth between each other.
