My cat vomits sucralfate for GI bleeding. What's the alternative?

Yes you can, a one tablet slurry. I'm not sure it will help much but it won't hurt. Call your vet when you can and report the reaction. It would be best to switch her to a different antibiotic. Amoxi-Clav is notorious for causing GI upset. Hope this helps.

To answer your question directly, omeprazole (Prilosec) would be the one to use. It would be a way to heal ulcers. I cannot honestly say that stomach ulcers are not that common in cats. I strongly believe there is something else underlying. I would recommend an abdominal ultrasound as the next step and/or a barium x-ray series. If you think the sucralfate is making her feel sicker then you can chose to discontinue until you talk with your veterinarian tomorrow and discuss permanently discontinuing this medication. Couple of concerns here. Were you given an option of referral to obtain a definitive diagnosis? Differentiation of these diseases requires biopsy. Did your pet have an ultrasound? Also having a chemotherapy medication made in to a liquid is a big safety concern unless a pet has a feeding tube. Were you counseled about safe drug and urine/fecal handling with this drug? Also has your kitty had blood monitoring with this drug for safety? There are typically some other things we do with cats with GI disease but this is case dependent. Also the dosing for chlorambucil is different for different cats. What would really be best, if you feel that you need more help beyond your vet, you could request referral to a specialist (either an internist or an oncologist). I am sorry to hear your cat is not feeling well. If this medication was prescribed by your veterinarian and your cat is still vomiting despite the medication then I would seek veterinary care immediately. If the medication was NOT prescribed by your veterinarian then please do not give any more, and take your cat in for evaluation. You do not mention how old the kitty is-any number of issues could be going on. A foreign body obstruction in the intestinal tract, a gastrointestinal infection, dietary indiscretion, a cancerous process, even renal failure can cause the symptoms you have noted. Your cat needs a thorough physical exam and your vet May recommend some diagnostics such as xrays and bloodwork. I hope your kitty feels better soon.

I am so sorry for your loss. Stomach ulcers in a cat can develop secondary to some medication use or overdoses of anti-inflammatories. Ulcers can also develop as a result of severe gastritis (stomach inflammation) that can be seen when a cat has an underlying kidney problem. Toxins and chronic GI parasites are also a possibility. Even severe cases of inflammatory bowel disease could cause this. It's very difficult to nail down an exact cause without doing blood work and other diagnostics like ultrasound. Sometimes ulcers can be treated by using medications that block stomach acid production like famotidine and omeprazole. Something like sucralfate can also be used to coat the ulcer while it heals. Unfortunately there is no topical numbing oral solution for cats that I know of but something such as Sucralfate may help alleviate the ulcerations inside of the mouth. I would discuss this with a veterinarian as you will need a prescription to get Sucralfate. If she has stomatitis, she may need to have all of her teeth removed to help resolve this problem.
