My cat is puking, losing weight, and not eating. What antacid is safe?

I am so sorry for your loss. Stomach ulcers in a cat can develop secondary to some medication use or overdoses of anti-inflammatories. Ulcers can also develop as a result of severe gastritis (stomach inflammation) that can be seen when a cat has an underlying kidney problem. Toxins and chronic GI parasites are also a possibility. Even severe cases of inflammatory bowel disease could cause this. It's very difficult to nail down an exact cause without doing blood work and other diagnostics like ultrasound. Sometimes ulcers can be treated by using medications that block stomach acid production like famotidine and omeprazole. Something like sucralfate can also be used to coat the ulcer while it heals. With gastrointestinal disease, sometimes the intestines are just unable to absorb nutrients regardless of the type of food you feed. So, it is important to feed Elvis whatever he will eat. There are no natural remedies, as there is no quick medical fixes, either. Oral steroids often help for a while, but then other medications are often needed. You can try some of the cat foods labeled as sensitive stomach or sensitive skin. The best ones are made by Science Diet & Royal Canin. I would also try him on a good probiotic, like Purina's FortiFlora. It really does seem to help some of these cats with GI issues. I hope this helps Elvis with his weight loss & vomiting.

I would recommend taking Oliver back to the vet for re-evaluation. The vet may decide that retesting for diabetes and hyperthyroidism is a good idea - sometimes in the early stages of disease the tests would be very close to the normal range. If those tests are normal, then IBD should be considered. The most digestible diet without a prescription would be canned cat food, like Fancy Feast. The only way to help him gain weight is to get him to eat more food.

I am sorry to hear your cat is not feeling well. If this medication was prescribed by your veterinarian and your cat is still vomiting despite the medication then I would seek veterinary care immediately. If the medication was NOT prescribed by your veterinarian then please do not give any more, and take your cat in for evaluation. You do not mention how old the kitty is-any number of issues could be going on. A foreign body obstruction in the intestinal tract, a gastrointestinal infection, dietary indiscretion, a cancerous process, even renal failure can cause the symptoms you have noted. Your cat needs a thorough physical exam and your vet May recommend some diagnostics such as xrays and bloodwork. I hope your kitty feels better soon.

I hate to hear this is happening to Murcis. Situations like this are tough because no test is pointing towards to cause for the illness. I recommend to speak with your veterinarian about a prokinetic drug to help rule out any ileus that gut may be experiencing. This may be temporary if it is related to an underlying condition or permanent it could be the cause of these symptoms. The ultrasound may have given some clues to the gut motility so ask about that as well. I also recommend to discuss a food trial with a hydrolyzed protein diet and possibly even a course of steroids in case this is inflammatory bowel disease. Thank you for your post! I am sorry to hear Shurbee is not doing well. My concern at this age would be some type of malignancy. In older cats, one of the more common things we see in regards to cancer is intestinal / GI lymphoma. This does not always show up on blood work. I'm sorry that you are dealing with this with Laundry. There are a number of anti-nausea medications that can be helpful for Laundry. And if your veterinarian has not recently checked his blood work (including a thyroid level) and blood pressure, I would certainly recheck those values to make sure that they are normal. Then, you can discuss the best anti-nausea medication with your veterinarian to help Laundry feel better. They will not want to do a teeth cleaning on him if he is not feeling well, so be sure to have them evaluate Laundry and solve this problem first. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
