My dog is vomiting from meds. Can I give sucralfate for upset stomach?

If Bella just started vomiting since starting the Amoxicillin, I would stop giving her the medication and schedule a recheck with your vet. She likely is just sensitive to this medication and will do fine on another one. Try offering her something easily digestible to eat like plain boiled chicken and rice. I'm sorry to hear that Chance is having all of these troubles. I do not usually have patients that vomit on sucralfate. The medication works best if even on an empty stomach and separate from any other medications he may be taking. I like to have owners give it as a slurry. The tablet will dissolve in a syringe of water and can be given that way. I would try these suggestions before stopping the medication. If he continues to vomit, your veterinarian can prescribe a medication for nausea or another GI protectant instead of sucralfate. I hope this information helps!

Medication choice depends on what type of infection they found and if culture/sensitively was performed. Be sure to feed her before medication. In some cases smaller can be given more frequently, or different antibiotic or possibly a long lasting injection may be given if she can not tolerate oral medications Good luck I hope she’s better soon.

If you think the sucralfate is making her feel sicker then you can chose to discontinue until you talk with your veterinarian tomorrow and discuss permanently discontinuing this medication. Antibiotics and urinary tract infections themselves can both cause nausea/vomiting. However, as you finished the antibiotics 5 days ago, it is less likely that the vomiting is due to the UTI antibiotics. If she has recently gotten table food or had access to food from the garbage, she may have a condition called pancreatitis caused by a sudden high fat meal that may cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain. A trip to your veterinarian for screening bloodwork to rule out a liver/kidney/pancreas issue as the cause of the vomiting, subcutaneous fluid therapy, anti-nausea medication (cerenia), and a prescription intestinal diet is advised. If you are not able to get an appointment immediately, I recommend feeding only a bland diet of boiled rice and chicken (with no regular kibble) for the next 3-5 days. Sometimes this alone helps resolve the symptoms of mild gastroenteritis. Good luck!

It may be the antibiotic or it could be discomfort associated with the pancreatitis. Report the vomiting to your veterinarian and consider a recheck exam. Your veterinarian may dispense an anti emetic to control vomiting as well as pain management.

First make sure she is eating her food without vomiting, give her only half of the food amount. if after an hour she seems to be ok and she is not vomiting, give her the second half of her food and the antibiotics. if she continues vomiting you will have to take her to your vet.
