Why is my cat vomiting, not eating, and constipated with normal tests?

Hello, sorry to hear about Lucy. It sounds like he may be hungry since he is attempting to eat but has a hard time prehending and chewing his food. My concerns are that he could have something bothing his mouth which is preventing him from chewing his food. Alternatively, he could have something going on with his GI triact (inflammatory bowel disease vs parasites vs some form of obstruction from foreign material) or abnormalities assocaited with his liver, pancreas, or kidneys. Becuase he is not improing, the next step would be to check some bloowork and an abdominal ultrasound. This would hopefully rule out the pressence of the foreign material and an obtruction which would require surgery and rule out any underlying liver disease. Please have Lucy seen by his veterinarian today to further assess him. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. It sounds like your kitty is very ill. I would recommend taking him to an emergency clinic (or his regular clinic tomorrow if an emergency clinic is not possible) for an exam and labwork. This could be something treatable (or at least manageable, if not curable) or it may not be. I would be worried about kidney disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, cancer, and liver disease - it could definitely be other things too, but these are at the top of my list. If all his bloodwork was normal that rules out kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, etc. If your vet did not test for hyperthyroidism than a test should be done. An x-ray and/or ultrasound is defintely needed and will, hopefully, provide more information. He could have an infection, cancer, or obstruction/foreign body to name a few other possibilities. If he is not able to keep food down, I am not sure waiting until Friday is a good idea. He may continue to weaken and may become dehydrated. If your vet can't take an x-ray then you could consider taking him to an emergency clinic or another vet that can. An anti-vomiting injection may be helpfull if your vet didn't give him one. I hope that his problem is diagnosed and treated soon!

Cats often are not constipated but are having diarrhea. With her age I would be concerned about a disease causing a decreased appetite. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian for blood work and possible x-rays. At this age kidney disease, cancer and hyperthyroidism are very common. Also bad dental disease can cause a change in appetite. She most likely has an underlying disease that is causing her these secondary issues. I do not think changing her diet will be enough to make her feel better. A veterinarian visit is best. Hope she feels better soon

Persistent vomiting and refusal to eat is concerning, especially in an elderly pet where they may be weight loss or dehydration. Given the clear blood work i would be concerned about a possible obstruction, hairballs, tumours or a twisted bowel are all possible. Xrays may be recommended as well as tube feeding to maintain calorie intake until a diagnosis has been reached

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry you are having trouble with Nigel and that he is sick. Vomiting in cats can be very difficult to diagnose the underlying cause, and often require many tests and treatment trials to find the answer. I would recommend working him up for either food allergies, or IBD. IBD would require a biopsy to diagnose. A scope is recommended as well for this. The other thing you could trial first is a diet trial for food allergies. Diet trials are very tedious and difficult to perform, as you need to feed the diet for 8 weeks, and have that the ONLY food that goes into Nigel, including medicated chews. You start with a diet like Hill's z/d or Hill's hypoallergenic. If the vomiting improves, then you slowly add in foods, one at a time, to determine what causes the allergy. Just switching foods for a week or two will not tell you if it is a food allergy. Discuss these options with your vet. If these don't work, then I would recommend a consult with an internal medicine specialist. Best of luck with Nigel!

It looks like Marshmellow has an extensive history, and in order for any veterinarian to help, they would need all of the diagnostics and medical history to form an opinion. Something is definitely wrong with her and if your current vet is not giving satisfying answers, then you should probably seek a second opinion. You may also consider bringing Marshmellow to a specialist. There are medicine and surgery specialists located in the Twin Cities at the University of Minnesota. This can all get rather expensive, so it's up to you how much you want to pursue this. I think it would be best to at-least have another vet give an opinion. Sometimes a fresh set of eyes can come up with new ideas. I hope that helps and Marshmellow feels better soon.
