Why is my cat vomiting daily and not eating after food change?

Romeo is gorgeous! Thank you for including pictures. Missing teeth is not a reason that Romeo should be vomiting. I think I would recommend having your vet do an exam and do some blood work to evaluate for something like hyperthyroidism which causes cats to eat more, but not gain weight because their metabolism is abnormal. It is a treatable condition, and there are certainly other things that could be going on with Romeo, so I would start with a trip to the vet to determine what might be going on with him and to determine how to treat it. You can try keeping him on a sensitive stomach food such as Iams limited ingredient, Fromm, or Purina sensitive stomach. However, it sounds like Keeko may have a inflammatory bowel disease and really the prescription diets have more reliable results. Also I would keep in mind that sudden switches from one food to the next can cause upset stomach issues in and of themselves. It is recommend to do a slow transition over the course of 7-10 days whenever you are making a food change. This is just 1 test to run so this should be something you could feasible do to at least get him started on something more reliable and effective. If the vomiting does not improve within a few weeks of being on the food, or if he develops any more symptoms, then he should be worked up further (i.e. abdominal x-rays). While it can not be determined for sure, it would definitely seem that the food resulted in either an upset stomach, an allergic reaction, or a mixture of the two. The vomiting could have certainly irritated the lining of the throat and resulted in the some pain / discomfort. Another consequence of vomiting however that is far more serious is if an of the vomit was inhaled accidentally into the lungs. This can result in pneumonia and the various consequences of such a condition. Since his condition has persisted for a number of days now even after switching back to the old food, I would say that it is time to have him examined by a veterinarian to make sure there is nothing else going on that's requires addressing. They may want to obtain some blood work or imaging to ensure you that there are no serious problems. Hope this helps.

It is not normal for a cat to vomit that frequently, so your cat may have inflammatory bowel disease or another type of chronic gastrointestinal disease. Since it has been going on for so, a diet change may not be enough at this point. The ideal situation would be to have your veterinarian do some testing to determine what is causing the vomiting. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry you are having trouble with Nigel and that he is sick. Vomiting in cats can be very difficult to diagnose the underlying cause, and often require many tests and treatment trials to find the answer. I would recommend working him up for either food allergies, or IBD. IBD would require a biopsy to diagnose. A scope is recommended as well for this. The other thing you could trial first is a diet trial for food allergies. Diet trials are very tedious and difficult to perform, as you need to feed the diet for 8 weeks, and have that the ONLY food that goes into Nigel, including medicated chews. You start with a diet like Hill's z/d or Hill's hypoallergenic. If the vomiting improves, then you slowly add in foods, one at a time, to determine what causes the allergy. Just switching foods for a week or two will not tell you if it is a food allergy. Discuss these options with your vet. If these don't work, then I would recommend a consult with an internal medicine specialist. Best of luck with Nigel!

Hi. There are many possible causes for vomiting from primary GI to secondary GI causes. If blood work or x-rays didn't get us many answers, I would move forward with an ultrasound as that much vomiting isn't normal. I would also recommend asking your veterinarian for a prescription bland diet during this time. Good luck

A sudden change of food will cause GI upset in cats, which is what it sounds like is happening with Jericho. When you do a sudden change in food, it's recommended to do it slowly. Because she is still occasionally vomiting, I would try a home remedy to see if that settles her stomach. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
