My cat is vomiting frequently after a food change, what can I do?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old

My cat is a 1&1/2, he started out throwing up the dry food, so I switch him to fancy feast salmon patted. So long period of time he would only throw up like twice a month maybe, I recently switched to 9 lives patted and he was fine for 2 weeks, now today he has throw up 3 times, in other words every time he has eaten. He is not spayed as of yet. Please help, I really don't have the money for taking him in to vet for them to run a lot of expensive tests.

You can try keeping him on a sensitive stomach food such as Iams limited ingredient, Fromm, or Purina sensitive stomach. However, it sounds like Keeko may have a inflammatory bowel disease and really the prescription diets have more reliable results. Also I would keep in mind that sudden switches from one food to the next can cause upset stomach issues in and of themselves. It is recommend to do a slow transition over the course of 7-10 days whenever you are making a food change.

You should at the very least get her examined and open up the conversation with the vet to do baseline bloodowork to rule out anything major and then ask for a prescription diet for Royal Canin Rabbit and Potato or Roylal Canin hydrolyzed protein diet, or HIll's Z/D Ultra to start her on a food trial. This is just 1 test to run so this should be something you could feasible do to at least get him started on something more reliable and effective. If the vomiting does not improve within a few weeks of being on the food, or if he develops any more symptoms, then he should be worked up further (i.e. abdominal x-rays).

My cat throws up often. Should I try Iams sensitive stomach food?

You can try Iams to see if that helps Pumpkin. They have a sensitive stomach formula for cats, and it's an excellent. Just make the food switch slowly to avoid any further GI upset. If this food switch does not help, she will need to see a vet. I hope this helps.

My cat vomits dry food and has diarrhea on wet. What diet helps?

In an otherwise healthy cat that has chronic vomiting episodes, it sounds like Rigby may have a condition called inflammatory bowel disease. This is common in cats and is difficult to diagnose (requires an intestinal biopsy). I would ask the vet to consider this diagnosis and then they can prescribe the correct treatment for it to try and see if he has some improvement with his vomiting. Treatment usually involves a highly digestible prescription diet (or comparable over the counter diet such as California Natural by Natura) and steroids. What to do if my cat is vomiting and not eating after food change?

A sudden change of food will cause GI upset in cats, which is what it sounds like is happening with Jericho. When you do a sudden change in food, it's recommended to do it slowly. Because she is still occasionally vomiting, I would try a home remedy to see if that settles her stomach. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

My cat threw up after food change and is now quiet. What's wrong?

While it can not be determined for sure, it would definitely seem that the food resulted in either an upset stomach, an allergic reaction, or a mixture of the two. The vomiting could have certainly irritated the lining of the throat and resulted in the some pain / discomfort. Another consequence of vomiting however that is far more serious is if an of the vomit was inhaled accidentally into the lungs. This can result in pneumonia and the various consequences of such a condition. Since his condition has persisted for a number of days now even after switching back to the old food, I would say that it is time to have him examined by a veterinarian to make sure there is nothing else going on that's requires addressing. They may want to obtain some blood work or imaging to ensure you that there are no serious problems. Hope this helps.

Sensitive cat has soft stool & lost weight after food switch. Vet?

Cats, unlike dogs can eat only meat and be fine, as they are obligate carnivores. Dogs can actually be fed a vegetarian diet but cats cannot. If she was doing well on the previous food then transition her back if you want, or you can give her a little more time to get used to the new diet. You could even transition her to a completely canned diet. If you changed her abruptly from one to the other, that could be what started her problems, especially if she has a sensitive stomach. Since she's eating fine I don't think you need to rush her to the vet just yet, as long as she seems well otherwise. Decide what food you want to feed her long-term and transition her slowly from her current diet by offering her some of each dry food in two separate bowls for a few days. Then put 75% old food/25% new food in the bowl together for a few days. Then go to 50%/50%, then 25%/75%, taking a few days each time. Gradually reduce the amount of old food until she is completely fed the new dry food. If she gets an upset stomach, you can back up a step and hold there until she feels better. If she loses her appetite, starts vomiting, becomes lethargic, then do get her in to see your vet as soon as you can.

Why is my cat vomiting after starting Urinary SO cat food?

When was Marshmallow put on Urinary SO? If he was just put on the food and he wasn't gradually transitioned to it they can get an upset stomach from it. If this is the case I would call your veterinarian for a bland diet and potentially an antacid to help settle his stomach then do a gradual transition to the new food. If Marshmallow has been on the food for some time, it is less likely the food and more likely something else is going on with Marshmallow. If this is the case I would recommend a visit with your veterinarian and potentially some X-rays making sure there is not foreign body obstruction and some blood work looking for pancreatitis. Your veterinarian can also give him medication to help stop the vomiting and settle his stomach. If you are uncomfortable with the food that they put him on there are other prescription diets for cats you can always ask your veterinarian which other ones they recommend.
