Why is my senior cat still vomiting, even with normal tests?

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Angora | Female | 17 years and 7 months old | 4 lbs

17yo cat had jaundice in January, was weak, wouldn't eat, drink, or use bathroom. Mostly recovered. Has had increasing occurrence of vomiting. Had emergency spaying, follicular cysts on ovaries. Was in for projectile vomiting and sudden weakness. She had nystagmus 2 or 3 days after surgery. Lasted one night. She has still been vomiting alot. Tests all been coming up ok. Slightly elevated ALT is only abnormality found. 128 i think it was. Vet clueless now. Any ideas?

It looks like Marshmellow has an extensive history, and in order for any veterinarian to help, they would need all of the diagnostics and medical history to form an opinion.

Something is definitely wrong with her and if your current vet is not giving satisfying answers, then you should probably seek a second opinion. You may also consider bringing Marshmellow to a specialist. There are medicine and surgery specialists located in the Twin Cities at the University of Minnesota. This can all get rather expensive, so it's up to you how much you want to pursue this. I think it would be best to at-least have another vet give an opinion. Sometimes a fresh set of eyes can come up with new ideas.

If I have an owner who wants to go the extra mile to help a beloved companion, then I would recommend the moon. I am so sorry that your current veterinarian has essentially given up. He/she is probably looking at Marshmellow's age, but sometimes that is irrelevant. Do you have a referral, emergency, or even a university/veterinary college nearby? I would recommend getting a second opinion. Your veterinarian may be right, but you should be the one to decide when to stop. We can offer our opinion & help you make the decision, but if there is one more thing to do to help Marshmellow, then absolutely go for it. I hope he does well.

I'm so sorry to hear that Marshall is having such problems. Unfortunately, when a cat cannot keep any food down and continues to vomit, he needs additional treatment. It is great news that all his lab tests were normal, so maybe he just needs some anti-nausea medication. Since he is unable to keep food down, he will need the medication to be given by injection (at least initially), so it will require another trip to the vet. Good luck! Why is my cat vomiting, not eating, and constipated with normal tests?

I hate to hear this is happening to Murcis. Situations like this are tough because no test is pointing towards to cause for the illness. I recommend to speak with your veterinarian about a prokinetic drug to help rule out any ileus that gut may be experiencing. This may be temporary if it is related to an underlying condition or permanent it could be the cause of these symptoms. The ultrasound may have given some clues to the gut motility so ask about that as well. I also recommend to discuss a food trial with a hydrolyzed protein diet and possibly even a course of steroids in case this is inflammatory bowel disease. Why is my senior cat still vomiting and lethargic after diarrhea?

I’m sorry to hear that CJ is not getting better. At this time, since she has not responded to traditional therapy I think you need to pursue further diagnostics like blood work (to rule out hyperthyroidism, diabetes and kidney disease), X-rays (to rule out a mass or blockage) and possibly an abdominal ultrasound. Also, you may want to consider talking with your vet about hospitalizing CJ with IV fluids and medications until she is stabilized and you can determine what is causing her illness. Why is my senior cat vomiting and having diarrhea again? What tests?

Causes of diarrhea and vomiting at this age include pancreatitis, IBD, Lymphoma and other types of cancer. it is not easy to diagnose those conditions, she will need some specific blood tests and a specialist ultrasound to start with.

Why is my cat still throwing up food after two years of treatment?

I would talk to your vet about submitting a GI panel or performing biopsies. Even with normal ultrasounds, IBD or lymphoma may not be able to be diagnosed. Empirical deworming may be indicated. Steroid trials may help. Has the thyroid level been checked? There is so much more information we need to be able to help you in this complicated case. Why is my senior cat vomiting daily but still active? Is it food?

With Sasha's age and the consistent vomiting, I am concerned that she may have something systemic going on. Quite commonly I see kidney disease in older cats and this can cause consistent vomiting. There are also other conditions such as GI inflammatory disease that can lead to persistent vomiting like you are seeing. My best recommendation would be to have a veterinarian examine Sasha and have her blood tested to start with. This will help rule out multiple potential causes of what you are seeing. Why is my senior cat sick, vomiting, and weak with normal bloodwork?

If all his bloodwork was normal that rules out kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, etc. If your vet did not test for hyperthyroidism than a test should be done. An x-ray and/or ultrasound is defintely needed and will, hopefully, provide more information. He could have an infection, cancer, or obstruction/foreign body to name a few other possibilities. If he is not able to keep food down, I am not sure waiting until Friday is a good idea. He may continue to weaken and may become dehydrated. If your vet can't take an x-ray then you could consider taking him to an emergency clinic or another vet that can. An anti-vomiting injection may be helpfull if your vet didn't give him one. I hope that his problem is diagnosed and treated soon!
