Why is my 9-month-old cat throwing up clear liquid with foam weekly?

That's definitely concerning. Bombay could have something stuck in his intestines, an intestinal parasite, or even a metabolic problem. I would recommend getting him to the clinic this week for an exam and some x-rays to see if they can find a cause. He could also have vomited once because of eating something strange or a virus, and the vomiting itself irritated his stomach so he keeps vomiting - sometime treatment with fluids and an anti-vomiting medication is all that is needed to settle these guys down, but it's important to do testing first to make sure nothing else is going on. There could be several things that is causing your cat to vomit. Some of the more common things that cause vomiting and anorexia in a cat are gastritis (inflammation of the stomach wall), pancreatitis, intestinal parasites, and irritable bowel disease. I would withhold food from your cat for about 24 hours to give the stomach some time to rest. If she is continuing to vomit or still not eating after this, then I would recommend taking her in to see your vet. They can give her nausea medication and fluids if she is dehydrated. They may also recommend blood work and X-rays if it is indicated. Good luck.

Yellow foamy vomit can sometimes indicate reflux or a very empty stomach. If it's only happened rarely, you can try offering food in smaller amounts more often to help keep Ravioli's tummy full and see if it helps. If he vomits more often, or seems lethargic or otherwise ill, or the vomiting continues intermittently even with a change in meal times, a vet visit is a good idea to rule out any more serious issues.

There are many, many potential causes of intermittent vomiting in cats. It could be a food sensitivity, partial obstruction, kidney or liver disease, or hairball. I would recommend starting by having your vet perform a physical exam. From there they might recommend checking some lab work and/or taking x-rays. If Butterscotch is indoor/outdoor a fecal analysis to check for parasites might also be recommended.

I would probably go back to the old food to see if the vomiting stops. Make a slow transition over 4 -5 days from the current food back to the old food. If she continue to vomit after the switch back then you probably need to take her in to see a vet.

Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are many different reasons why cats will vomit periodically. It could be an allergy or sensitivity to the food, to inflammation anywhere in the GI tract, pancreatitis, liver or kidney disease, and many more. These cases can be extremely frustrating and take lots of testing to figure out because of this. The first thing I recommend is screening blood work to look for organ dysfunction that could lead to vomiting. In the vast majority of cats who are acting normal other than the vomiting, the blood work is usually normal. X-rays are also performed to look for any obvious change in organ shape or size and to look for obstruction, masses, etc. Beyond that, the testing gets more involved and typically involves an abdominal ultrasound. Sometime this can give you an answer. Other times the only way to confirm a diagnosis is through biopsies of the affected organs. The other thing that is commonly recommended is a change in diet. If there is an ingredient that she is sensitive to, we want to try to eliminate it from her diet. This is best done with a prescription diet because over-the-counter diets can be contaminated with ingredients that are not on the label. Food trials need to be done for at least 6 to 8 weeks and they can't eat anything else during this time. If the vomiting resolves with the new diet, I recommend keeping her on that diet long-term.

I recommend getting your cat seen by your vet or an emergency vet right away. Cats need to eat, if they go more than a few days without eating they can develop serious liver problems which can be fatal. Continuous vomiting for so many hours is very exhausting and dehydrating, so your kitten likely needs some medical intervention to get better. Your vet will do an exam, labwork, possibly x-rays, and based on these results, your vet will have a better idea what is going on and can better advise you about treatment options.
