My cat vomits after eating. What food is best for digestion?

It is not normal for a cat to vomit that frequently, so your cat may have inflammatory bowel disease or another type of chronic gastrointestinal disease. Since it has been going on for so, a diet change may not be enough at this point. The ideal situation would be to have your veterinarian do some testing to determine what is causing the vomiting. But you first have to differentiate whethere whether Coix is vomting (obvious retching and forceful expulsion) or regurgitating (undigested food just seems to come out without much effort). Vomiting can be caused by inflammatory bowel disease, megaesophagus (typically causes regurgitation), a parasitic infection (not as common), or even an underlying congenital disorder. Most of these conditions are treatable. You should first start with some diagnostic testing to gather more information on your specific pets condition. Then we will know what needs to be done for Coix to help control his vomiting episodes a bit better. In general, you can continue to feed smaller portions and go with an easily digestible diet such as limited ingredient diets (i.e. Iams, Purina, Evo). This is something you can easily start while awaiting a proper vet visit and diagnostic work-up for Coix. In an otherwise healthy cat that has chronic vomiting episodes, it sounds like Rigby may have a condition called inflammatory bowel disease. This is common in cats and is difficult to diagnose (requires an intestinal biopsy). I would ask the vet to consider this diagnosis and then they can prescribe the correct treatment for it to try and see if he has some improvement with his vomiting. Treatment usually involves a highly digestible prescription diet (or comparable over the counter diet such as California Natural by Natura) and steroids. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Zelda! The most common reason for cats to chronically vomit are food allergies and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). If she has IBD she may be having a flare up unrelated to her diet, from a viral infection, worms, she ate something gross, she ate something foreign or has pancreatitis. Also I am not sure if you are using an OTC or prescription based hypoallergenic cat food. Studies have shown the the pet store diets are not as "pure" and chicken free as the prescription diets. I would have Zelda examined by your Vet and have some supportive medications started to stop the vomiting and consider starting a prescription hydrolyzed diet like Royal Canin HP or Purina HA. You can try keeping him on a sensitive stomach food such as Iams limited ingredient, Fromm, or Purina sensitive stomach. However, it sounds like Keeko may have a inflammatory bowel disease and really the prescription diets have more reliable results. Also I would keep in mind that sudden switches from one food to the next can cause upset stomach issues in and of themselves. With gastrointestinal disease, sometimes the intestines are just unable to absorb nutrients regardless of the type of food you feed. So, it is important to feed Elvis whatever he will eat. There are no natural remedies, as there is no quick medical fixes, either. Oral steroids often help for a while, but then other medications are often needed. You can try some of the cat foods labeled as sensitive stomach or sensitive skin. The best ones are made by Science Diet & Royal Canin. I would also try him on a good probiotic, like Purina's FortiFlora. It really does seem to help some of these cats with GI issues. I hope this helps Elvis with his weight loss & vomiting.

Hello. Some veterinary nutritional specialists do recommend feeding cats only a wet diet, & some even go so far as to recommend not feeding anything with fish. There is no harm in slowly switching Linus to a canned meat or poultry diet, but if this does not stop or slow down the vomiting, you may have to try a truly hypoallergenic diet such as Hill's z/d.
