My cat used to eat hypoallergenic kibble, now she's vomiting it. Why?

You can try keeping him on a sensitive stomach food such as Iams limited ingredient, Fromm, or Purina sensitive stomach. However, it sounds like Keeko may have a inflammatory bowel disease and really the prescription diets have more reliable results. Also I would keep in mind that sudden switches from one food to the next can cause upset stomach issues in and of themselves. This is just 1 test to run so this should be something you could feasible do to at least get him started on something more reliable and effective. If the vomiting does not improve within a few weeks of being on the food, or if he develops any more symptoms, then he should be worked up further (i.e. abdominal x-rays). It could be an allergy or sensitivity to the food, to inflammation anywhere in the GI tract, pancreatitis, liver or kidney disease, and many more. These cases can be extremely frustrating and take lots of testing to figure out because of this. The first thing I recommend is screening blood work to look for organ dysfunction that could lead to vomiting. In the vast majority of cats who are acting normal other than the vomiting, the blood work is usually normal. X-rays are also performed to look for any obvious change in organ shape or size and to look for obstruction, masses, etc. Beyond that, the testing gets more involved and typically involves an abdominal ultrasound. Sometime this can give you an answer. Other times the only way to confirm a diagnosis is through biopsies of the affected organs. The other thing that is commonly recommended is a change in diet. If there is an ingredient that she is sensitive to, we want to try to eliminate it from her diet. This is best done with a prescription diet because over-the-counter diets can be contaminated with ingredients that are not on the label. Food trials need to be done for at least 6 to 8 weeks and they can't eat anything else during this time. If the vomiting resolves with the new diet, I recommend keeping her on that diet long-term.

I am personally not a fan of grain free diets unless the pet has a proven grain allergy due to the issues with dogs right now and grain free diets (heart disease). This issues hasn't been reported in the cat grain free diets. I have no problem with the Nutro you pictured above IF it solves Greyson's chronic vomiting problem Give him 2-3 months on the diet and if it significantly reduces the vomiting I am fine with it. Possible causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), are something that is causing a blockage, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, hair balls, food allergy/intolerance. Cats with nausea or underlying intestinal disease like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) like to lick cardboard, eat paper products, etc. Since she is under 1 year of age and she is known to lick (at least) foreign objects, a blockage is high on the list. If she continues to vomit I would have her seen today before the weekend for an exam and belly X-rays. If everything looks good the Vet can provide a GI diet, anti-nausea and maybe a hair ball remedy. I wish Harley the best!

Hello. Some veterinary nutritional specialists do recommend feeding cats only a wet diet, & some even go so far as to recommend not feeding anything with fish. There is no harm in slowly switching Linus to a canned meat or poultry diet, but if this does not stop or slow down the vomiting, you may have to try a truly hypoallergenic diet such as Hill's z/d. First, a daily probiotic like Forti-Flora can be very helpful for some cats with chronic vomiting problems - this is very safe and does not have any risks or side effects, so it's a good option to try first. If this doesn't help, I would recommend talking to your vet about whether prescription medication may be helpful for Darcy. Anti-nausea medications like Cerenia, and oral steroids like prednisone are both potentially good options that can be given daily if needed to help prevent vomiting episodes.

Hill's Science Diet and Purina are also good food. I would try a sensitive stomach formula in Royal Canin first then switch brands. Be sure to keep in mind that a food allergy is just once cause of vomiting. Other causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, hair balls, foreign body, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion or inflammatory bowel disease.
