Why do my cats throw up when they smell my cat post-surgery?

Poor Kilro! It's likely that he could be suffering from a GI illness or possibly eating something rotten rather than be disgusted by your other's cats smell. I will give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps before having to take him into the vet, but I would also caution about letting him near the mother cat and her kittens. Mother cats can be very protective of their kittens around other cats, and they should be isolated while the kittens are very young to reduce stress. Once the kittens have their eyes open and are more mobile (around four weeks of age), then you can let them around Kilro. As for the home remedy, I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. This can cause stress in the older cat resulting in her to act out in aggression. Keep them separate unless they are fully supervised. They should be fine with each other in a few days. Sometimes kittens can actually get hyperactive in response to the sedatives that are used during the procedure. You definitely don’t want Ginger jumping around or being too active. I recommend to shut him either in a small bathroom or a large dog crate. Make sure to provide his food, water and litter box. Hang out with him if you need to until he calms down. I suspect the sniffing is also just a side effect from the sedative. If he does not seem normal by tomorrow, call his veterinarian. I am not quite sure what she may have thrown up in the picture. It looks like it could be rice or even intestinal parasites. Since she is still vomiting parts of the plastic bag, I would be concerned that there may have been something missed during surgery. If she shredded the bag, there could be tiny pieces in her stomach and/or small intestines that would never be felt when look at these organs during exploratory surgery. She may need additional treatment to help these pass, including IV fluids, anti-nausea medications, enemas, or medications to help stimulate her intestines to move.

It is possible that he could have had a reaction to the anesthesia or just the stress of being neutered. Or it could be completely coincidental and it could be secondary to something else like parasites, foreign body, a sudden change in food, pancreatitis, an underlying infection, and much more. I would try to feed him some plain boiled boneless and skinless chicken and white rice. I would also try to start him on some probiotics. Your vet should be able to provide these or give you some recommendations. You can try some plain sugar free yogurt but the probiotics in this isn't as good as the cat probiotics because we have different bacteria in our gut than in cats. The next step should be to have him re-examined and likely have some bloodwork done. I would also make sure the vet has ruled out an parasites including giardia which is difficult to find on a regular fecal test. If your vet doesn't think there is a foreign body, they will be able to provide him with a good anti-nausea medicine to help with the vomiting. I hope this helps!

Hello. It is very difficult to say how well the momma cat will accept the kitten. It is not necessarily a time issue, more the presence of strange & unusual scents the kitten will return with. What I would do is introduce the kitten back to mom after it has had a few hours at home & with its siblings. Rub the new kitten & the siblings alternating between everyone & hopefully familiar odors will be imparted to the returning kitten while diluting anything strange brought home. I do not think I would bathe anyone since this is just stressful. Maternal behavior is very strong so hopefully the family will just settle in together. Without a picture it is hard to comment on the bump. But commonly they can develop a reaction to the suture with causes more inflammation and can cause a bump. Or if they are too active after surgery they can develop a small Seroma which is fluid and swelling. each if these goes away in time with no treatment As far as the vomiting I would just give her dry food for the next week to give her some time to rest her GI track. You can introduce canned food back after that and if the vomiting continues then consult your vet about a food allergy or medication to help
