My cat pees often, strains, little urine. Is there an OTC for UTI?

Unfortunately, it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to prescribe any medication without seeing the animal in person first. That's because we don't know if the medication is safe for your cat's current medical status, or if it's the correct medication for their symptoms. If he is urinating frequently, I would suspect he has a UTI. I would take him into the vet to confirm he has a UTI, and the vet can prescribe antibiotics to treat it.

A recheck would be a good idea as cats can often have inflammation of their urinary bladders without an infection or after an infection clears. It would be worrisome if Lolo continues to have issues with urination which would mean she may need long term management with diet and supplements to help reduce the occurrence of such episodes. I'm concerned about these symptoms, and they can be signs of feline idiopathic cystitis or bladder stones. Not much coming out can be very serious, and I think it's best she sees a vet now. In cats with urinary irritation, wet food is preferable to help reduce urine concentration and flush out the bladder. I strongly recommend a urine exam in order to determine exactly what is going on and to guide the most appropriate treatment (infection/inflammation etc). A sample can be collected using special urine collection litter which does not absorb urine. Petco provide a home kit for detecting UTI which can help to monitor such conditions

The most common cause for urinary tract problems in cats are feline interstitial cystitis, crystals in the urine and bladder stones. We can not diagnose diseases over the internet or provide drug doses with out actually examining the patient as it is against the law. Since it is a very small chance he needs antibiotics my advice is to take a urine sample and Harry for an exam at the Vet. You can repost with his symptoms and we can try to provide advice. Causes of inappropriate urination with blood are: urinary tract infection, stress cystitis, crystals in the urine, bladder stone, or a bladder tumor. It is likely that Nina has a bacterial UTI but there are many other causes for her issues. With her history of kidney issues she should be examined and a urine sample should be tested before starting her on antibiotics. Using antibiotics inappropriately builds resistance. I recommend taking her to the Vet and trying to not let her urinate for several hours (lock her in a room with out a box) or collect a urine sample to bring with you. If she does have a UTI your Vet can appropriately dose the Clavaseptin and tell you how long based on her specific infection. I wish Nina a speedy recovery!

If she eats canned food, add more water to the food, or if she doesn't usually eat wet food you may want to start switching her to a wet food diet. Be sure to check with her veterinarian if she should be on a prescription diet for urinary issues before making any long term food changes. Do not give her any pain medications at home or any antibiotics you may have access too. Many human medications are toxic to cats. The best thing to do is to get her to the veterinarian as soon as they can get you in. I hope she's feeling better soon.
