How can I tell my cat's urine color when it's in the litter box?

Hi there and thank you for your post! Unfortunately there is no dye that you can feed a cat that will cause the urine to become luminescent. The best way to try and determine which cat it is would be to put them in individual rooms with their own litter box and see which one it is. I hope this helps! I recommend that you check and make sure that she is drinking enough water. Sometimes using several water bowls throughout the house is helpful. Another way to stimulate her to eat canned food which is high in water content. Good luck!

Well I wouldn't expect any of the cats to be sick from the lilies if they just sniffed it and didn't actually ingest any of them. So that is not a concern, especially if you don't see any other overt signs of lily toxicity which would include vomiting, lethargy and a lack of appetite. However a cystitis or UTI is a possible cause of the bloody urine. One good way to determine which cat is responsible is to isolate one cat at a time in a small room with a clean litterbox in it for a day, then monitor the urine output for blood. Another thing you could do is to gently palpate (feel) the cats bladder (lower abdomen) to see which one seems uncomfortable or painful. You could also try to monitor the cats for 1 hr duration to see which one is constantly going to the litterbox. Chances are the one that is affected is going many times within the hour and will be noticeably drinking more water as well.

This litter does not detect illness, rather it detects changes in urine that may indicate illness or infection. It is similar to how pH strips and a blood detection strips work. Instead of on a strip, the chemical is in the litter and responds to urine chemistry. This litter should not be used to diagnose illness. That should be left up to your veterinarian. It may be help to monitor certain conditions though.

It does look like the urine is blood tinged. It may be that she has some crystals in her urine, bladder stones, or a urinary tract infection, though these conditions often result in symptoms of frequent urination, pain while urinating ( sometimes yowling in the box, or seeming to be in and out of the box, or urinating inappropriately outside of the box). Another possibility would be a toxin exposure; acetaminophen is extremely toxic to cats and causes the urine to appear bloody. Since she isn't acting ill at all, this seems unlikely; however, I would advise that you ensure there hasn't been a possible exposure. If she's eating, drinking, acting ok, not lethargic, no vomiting, diarrhea, change in breathing, etc, its not an emergency (UNLESS SHE'S GOTTEN TYLENOL), but take her in to your vet at your first convenience. Unfortunately there really isn't anything to be done at home without knowing what the cause is. Ensuring she is drinking plenty of water by keeping multiple water sources available throughout the house, and feeding canned/wet food are both good ideas for urinary health, regardless of the cause of the issue. I would recommend you encourage him to drink more water which you may do by feeding him canned food or increasing the number of water bowls around the house. Other possibilities include something like a urinary tract infection. For this reason, if this continues, Thor should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Poor kitty. Cats can have blood in their urine as a result of stress, bladder stones or even an underlying urinary tract infection. As long as he is urinating readily with no excessive straining, vocalization, or lethargy, he shouldn't be in any immediate danger. I would recommend taking him in to your vet within the next day or two to have a urinalysis done so that he can ge properly diagnosed and treated. Until then, continue to monitor him for any of the symptoms that I mentioned above, which would warrant an emergency visit to the vet. Otherwise, a regular vet visit is appropriate.
