Does Pretty Litter actually work to detect cat health problems?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 10 lbs

I heard of something called 'Pretty Litter' that is said to detect any health issues your cat may have based on their pee. I was wondering if there's any scientific evidence proving this and if it actually works.

This litter does not detect illness, rather it detects changes in urine that may indicate illness or infection. It is similar to how pH strips and a blood detection strips work. Instead of on a strip, the chemical is in the litter and responds to urine chemistry.
This litter should not be used to diagnose illness. That should be left up to your veterinarian. It may be help to monitor certain conditions though.

That's a great question! From the research I've found, it appears that Pretty Litter can change color based on the pH of the urine, if it's more acidic it turns one color, it's more alkaline it turns a different color. Additionally it can detect whether there is blood in the urine at levels that would be tough to see without a microscope. Though keeping track of your cat's urine pH as well as any blood she may have in her urine can be helpful when we are evaluating for the likelihood that your cat may develop urinary crystals or stones, or whether she may have inflammation in her bladder, this litter by no means will detect any health issues Mona may be having. This litter could be helpful to monitor a cat who has a history of an abnormal urine pH and who is on a special diet to help maintain a specific pH. This litter should not be used as a substitute for a veterinary examination or diagnostic testing by Mona's doctor. I hope this was helpful to you!

How can I tell my cat's urine color when it's in the litter box?

Hello. Unless there is obvious blood, it is unlikely you would be able to tell differences in urine color once the urine is soaked up by the litter. There are some litters that will monitor certain conditions, such as diabetes & liver disease. There is a color change if there is a change, but I know on no veterinarians that will recommend this. The results are just too vague to justify the costs. Most concerns from owners will come if a cat urinates outside the box on a non absorbent surface. I just would not worry about anything your kitty does in the litter box as long as she is happy & otherwise seems healthy. My cat's Pretty Litter turned green. What should I expect at the vet?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Frida Katio (great name!) I understand your worry! Try to bring a urine sample to the vet with you or don't let her urinate a few hours before the appointment so the Vet can collect urine. Frida is a young girl and I am assuming otherwise doing well. At a minimum your Vet will do a urinalysis which looks for blood, protein, crystals, white blood cells and bacteria in the urine. Based on that they may send extra urine out to the lab to culture it. Struvite crystals are common when a urinary tract infection is present and we hope once the infection is treated the crystals will go away. If there is an infection your Vet will prescribe an antibiotic in either a pill, liquid or injectable form based on your ability to medicate her. If there are just crystals and no infection they may check for bladder stones or start her on a prescription urinary diet. i wish you and Frida Katio the best is luck!

Why is my cat scooting and PrettyLitter turning blue? Vet needed?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Finn. The color blue can indicate an issue but it can mean something else. According to their website, "When PrettyLitter is at the end of its life cycle because the month is expiring or there isn't enough litter in the litter box to absorb urine and evaporate moisture, the urine can pool at the bottom of the litter box becoming concentrated and causing a reaction that changes the bottom of the litter blue." Given that he is acting 100% fine, it's not an emergency to rush him into a vet, but I would have him seen as soon as you can. I hope this helps!

Why does my cat's urine smell like ammonia? Is it a health concern?

Urine is mostly water and urea which is a waste product of protein breakdown. Urea can develop into ammonia NH3 > NH4 which is why your cat litter smells like ammonia. You should empty out the litter completely more frequently (less deep litter with frequent cleaning is preferable for your cat). If your cat is older you should consider taking her in for blood testing to check her kidney function. There is a new test called SDMA which can detect early kidney disease.

Is scented cat litter safe for my allergic cat with skin issues?

I would not use a litter that has an aroma on a cat who is sensitive. I am not sure if you are able to purchase this certain litter system but if you are able to the Breeze litter system is great. How do I use the vet's kit to collect a urine sample from my cat?

Yes, that is correct. You remove the litter, and place the material in the box. Mitzi will use the box when she has to pee, as the material will be appealing to her to urinate in. This is a non-invasive way to get a urine sample from the cat. I hope this helps!

This can be a sign of pica, and it is bad for Mochi to do. It can cause an obstruction. Pica is a symptom of an underlying disease such as FIV, hyperthyroidism, anemia, feline leukemia, dental disease, diabetes, and others. I'd have her seen by a vet for this behavior. I hope this helps!
