My cats have a URI. Is it safe to neuter them, or should I reschedule?

In general, it is better to space it out just because both of these procedures (neuter surgery and vaccines) can result in complications or side effects, often times we do them close to each other or at the same time due to logistics and most cats do just fine. It is just a matter of being careful with the amount of time that he is under anesthesia and keeping it to a minimum and to watch that his blood pressure does not drop in the process. A castration is so quick that I would not be too concerned about this. I would recommend IV fluids all throughout the procedure. Best of luck!

Your cat should not be infectious at this point although the new kitten may have been exposed to another strain of upper respiratory infection so either cat could develop a mild respiratory infection again. This is like kids going to school and being exposed to viruses from the other kids. Regardless of when you adopt this could happen so go ahead and adopt the new kitten. Hello, the deworming medication is safe to give prior to surgery as it does not directly interact with the common anesthetics. However, the deworming medication may cause diarrhea and an upset stomach. This can add stress at the time of surgery and perhaps cause a poor appetite post surgery. If you'd like to be completely safe, you can separate the both, however, your kitten should be fine to have both procedures done so close to one another. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Usually neuter surgeries go without complications although like with any surgeries animals can have complications from being under anesthesia. It is recommended to avoid him getting to the incision to avoid delayed healing. You can do this by using an e-collar which you can obtain from your veterinarian or local pet store. Sometimes non-steroidal anti-inaflammarory drugs are used for a few days after surgery. Good luck!

If they are better from the URI, then I would recommend to go ahead and get them their first set of shots now. Most vets will recommend to give them a total of 3-4 sets of shots to help build their immune system.

Personal preference, but it may be because the vet does not want to house a contagious cat. Ringworm is a very hardy fungus, and it can live on surfaces for an incredible amount of time. A kennel where they keep a cat before and after surgery would be contaminated with the fungus and could possibly spread it to the next patients to use it, even after a thorough cleaning and disinfectant. Also, some infections can delay healing of the skin. Since neutering isn't a medically necessary procedure, your vet likely would prefer him to be in tip-top shape before undergoing anesthesia and surgery.
