Is it safe for my cat to get neutered and vaccinated together?

We do sometimes end up vaccinating pets the same day of surgery if necessary though it isn’t ideal. Most cases we will perform surgery first and then vaccinate the pet once they have recovered from anesthesia because we do not want to risk them having an adverse/allergic reaction to the vaccine (a rare occurrence) while under anesthesia. Ideally a vaccine would be given prior to surgery but not on the day of, but sometimes this isn’t possible.

Yes, it should be fine to do this unless your dog has some type of specific health concern that makes you worried. We routinely vaccinate dogs on the same day as spay/neuter surgery in my practice, and I have never seen any problems related to this.

I would keep the appointment and have your veterinarian proceed with an examination and determine if it would be safe to proceed with the procedure or not. Usually neuter surgeries go without complications although like with any surgeries animals can have complications from being under anesthesia. It is recommended to avoid him getting to the incision to avoid delayed healing. You can do this by using an e-collar which you can obtain from your veterinarian or local pet store. Sometimes non-steroidal anti-inaflammarory drugs are used for a few days after surgery. Good luck!

Hello, the deworming medication is safe to give prior to surgery as it does not directly interact with the common anesthetics. However, the deworming medication may cause diarrhea and an upset stomach. This can add stress at the time of surgery and perhaps cause a poor appetite post surgery. If you'd like to be completely safe, you can separate the both, however, your kitten should be fine to have both procedures done so close to one another. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It is important that booster vaccines are given 4 weeks apart for optimal immunity, so Milo may need to start the vaccine series over. At his age, he may only need two more rounds of vaccines. I am not 100% sure about the policies of the Petco Hospital near you, but most veterinarians would feel comfortable proceeding with neuter surgery even if booster vaccines will be due later. Most vets do not recommend doing the vaccines for the first time and surgery in the same visit, but a few days in between is usually sufficient. Spaying will prevent your female cat from going into heat, so it will likely deter your male cat from trying to breed.
