Dog's pulled dewclaw: Will new growth push it out or need removal?

The new claw is probably the cuticle which is inside the nail. This is quite painful. I would trim the toenail where it’s broken. If it’s at the cuticle it may bleed. When humans or dogs rip off their nails there is a possibility they can grow back abnormally or when he tore it in may not all of the old nail came off and part of it is still there. I would have your Vet take a look. If there is old nail still present he may need to be sedated to trim that away so the new nail can grow in appropriately. Good luck!

If you don't that will be a chronic source of pain and infection. Be very careful doing this as it is painful and Ryder may bite. Have someone help you. Pull hard and fast. It may bleed. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Max! if you are referring the the "thumb" nail that is the dew claw. If they tear or break that nail, the treatment is to cut it back to the pink vein or quick. If the nail has already been torn off to the pink vein and there isn't any residual nail hanging off then bandaging it for 3-5 days should be enough. Sometimes we do prescribe oral antibiotics and pain medications. The nail will grow back, which is a slow process. If there is still nail hanging on then it should be cut back as that is a constant source of pain. I wish Max the best!

They can consider removing the dew claw to take the source of pain away or it can be treated with pain medications and antibiotics for instance. In the meantime, keep him from being able to reach it as he will likely want to lick or chew at it which can make it a lot worse. You may use an e-collar for that purpose. Good luck!

Sorry to hear about Blackey. If it is just the nail that was torn, then they will grow back just fine overtime. If the actual dewclaw itself was torn, then they will not regrow. I would strongly recommend having the area looked at to see if they were ripped cleanly or if there is any bone currently exposed beyond the bed of the nail. If there is any active bleeding, a pressure bandage will likely be needed or in some cases sutures. Antibiotics, pain medications, and anti inflammatory medication will also likely be helpful in the treatment and recovery of your kitty. Hope this helps.
