My cat ripped off a nail. Will it grow back? How to care for it?

My cat was falling off a wall and ripped off her nail, she doesn't seem to be in pain, will the nail grow back?

If the nail was torn, it is a good idea to try and trim it back if there are loose edges above the quick to prevent further snagging. If it was completely pulled out, it can grow back, however it is best to monitor for signs of infection as nailbeds can easily become infected. This can include pain, swelling of the paw, limping, chewing/licking at the paw, oozing of debris and discoloration. If you see any signs of pain or infection it is best to bring her to the vet ASAP for treatment.

Cats will lose their nails, and yes they do grow back. A ripped nail can become infected, however, and there are a few things you can do at home to try to prevent that. Rinse your cat’s paw gently using warm water — this removes dirt and loose debris from his paw that could cause an infection in the toe. Apply pet antiseptic spray (you can get that from your vet) to the wound to kill germs, help prevent infection, and reduce discomfort. Monitor the paw daily for redness, swelling, heat, and pus, which indicates an infection, and see your vet right away if you see those signs. Keep Angel from licking the paw, which may require an Ecollar.

If your cat seems fine and without any pain, I would not take him into the vet. Cats can lose their nails, and I would monitor the area for now for signs of infection just to be safe. Look for signs of redness, swelling, pus, or warmth to the touch. Should you see any of those signs, then I would take him into the vet. Otherwise, you can gentle clean the area with some warm water and antiseptic soap.

Generally these heal uneventfully and a new nail will grow in its place over time. Keep the arrea clean with cooled boiled water for 2-3days and monitor for any heat, swelling or discharge indicating the need for a vet visit

Sorry to hear about Blackey. If it is just the nail that was torn, then they will grow back just fine overtime. If the actual dewclaw itself was torn, then they will not regrow. I would strongly recommend having the area looked at to see if they were ripped cleanly or if there is any bone currently exposed beyond the bed of the nail. If there is any active bleeding, a pressure bandage will likely be needed or in some cases sutures. Antibiotics, pain medications, and anti inflammatory medication will also likely be helpful in the treatment and recovery of your kitty. Hope this helps.

My dog ripped a nail off her front paw. What should I do to help her?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Ouch, poor Naria. If the nail is completely removed and exposing the nail bed, keep the toe as clean as possible to try to prevent infection. For my patients that have done this, I typically will place them on oral antibiotics and analgesics (pain medication) to prevent infection and keep them comfortable while the nail regrows. Some nails will not regrow normally if the nailbed was also injured. If Naria is limping on the affected paw, or the toe becomes swollen I would recommend having her seen by her veterinarian for appropriate medications to be dispensed.

IF the nail has fallen off and the pick fleshy tissue is exposed, then it can be painful for him. the pink tissue contained the nerve and blood supply and it is exposed so it is painful. If this is the case, then it will need to be clipped down to relieve the pain and let it grow in from there

My cat's paw is hurt after being missing. Should I see a vet?

Hi there. It looks like Mae ripped off her nail while she was out and about. There isn't much to do for that other than let the nail grow back. If she'll tolerate it, you can try soaking her feet in warm water with some epsom salts sprinkled in, this can be very soothing. My cat's paw nail is damaged and swollen. When should I see a vet?

It looks like your cat’s toenail has been sheared off, probably from an injury, fight or being hit by a car. My best recommendation is to take your car to the vet where they will be able to fully clean the area around the nail, trim the nails if necessary, and give your cat an antibiotic and pain medication if needed. My dog broke a nail. Will it grow back if the vet has to cut it off?

If it is just the nail without the bone, that was broken, then it should grow back. If the vet has to cut off the whole claw including the bone (last part of the digit) then it will not grow back. You should take Zeus to the vet , though, for some wound care, so he does not develop an infection. This is a very painful injury.
