My cat took very expired deworming medicine. Is she in danger?

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would recommend purchasing another dose for Alessio. It is not that there might be any harm in using an out of date product, but it might not have the same potency & thus leave him still having worms. Take care.

She will be fine. Dewormer has a really wide safety margin so double dosing does not cause any major issues for pets. At the most she may have a little upset stomach, but I don't even expect that to occur.

Hi there. While it's not ideal to delay her next scheduled dose of medication for deworming and flea prevention, this doesn't normally cause any major problems. Especially for an indoor-only cat, as her risk of exposure to these things is fairly low. it's possible that she may pick up some fleas or parasites in the meantime after her most recent dose stops working, but as long as you give the next dose as soon as you're able to, that should get things back on track. :)

If it had any evidence of mold, he may experience some gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting or diarrhea over the next 24-48 hours. If you notice that he is more lethargic/sleepier than usual, loses his appetite, vomits or has diarrhea, I would have him evaluated by your veterinarian. He may require some symptomatic gastrointestinal support. If he continues to act normally at home (eating, drinking, urinating and passing normal stools), and he is otherwise healthy, I think he should be OK! (And I would definitely throw out that old bag of food!). I hope this is helpful!

Generally speaking adult cats tend to be less sensitive to G.I. parasites and kittens. Also for many G.I. parasites they have to be passed in the feces and then spend a certain amount of time maturing before they become re-infective. So if you do a good job of cleaning the litter box frequently there's a lower risk of infection to your adult cat. If your adult cat is on a monthly heartworm preventative many of them also include a deworming medication. There are over-the-counter deworming medications you could consider giving to both cats however it's not guaranteed to clear all possible G.I. parasites. you could also discuss with your veterinarian about your inability to get a fecal sample and if they would be willing to just give a broad-spectrum deworming medication to your kitten.

If he vomited within 2 hours, I would recommend calling your vet to let them know and picking up a second dose to repeat the treatment. It likely didn't have enough time to absorb in to Allyson's system.

Great job with the bath! If they are not showing any signs of illness (behavior changes, vomiting, diarrhea, etc) they are probably ok, especially the one that got the bath. Ideally if you can get the other cat and either bathe him or at the very least wipe him down with a wet washcloth. I would continue to monitor them for any signs and definitely if you notice any changes with them they should be seen by a vet immediately. Also, i think after 5 years the efficacy is greatly reduced, but the best place to get that information is by calling the Animal Poison Control Hotline.
