My cat keeps throwing up liquid. Should I take him to the vet?

Poor guy. If he has vomited more than a few times within an hour and seems unstable (lethargic, weak, non-responsive), then this is considered an emergency and he should go to any available vet or ER vet today. However, if he is still active, nice pink gums, and responsive, you can monitor him to see if the vomiting subsides. You should also fast him (not food, only water) for at least 12 hrs, then try offering him a bland diet of tuna and white rice or lean ground turkey and white rice to see if you can help settle his stomach. Hopefully he turns around and just ate something that upset his stomach a bit. I hope that Mitch recovers soon from his apparent stomach upset. Best of luck moving forward. Take care. : )

I am sorry that Stripes is not feeling well! Cats are very good at hiding signs that they are ill, so even though he has been acting normally, the fact that he has been vomiting a lot and that you indicate he wants to be close to you make me concerned. Vomiting is a non-specific sign of illness in cats (meaning that any sick cat can vomit and it does not point to a specific problem). When you take Stripes to the vet (and please call tomorrow for an appointment), your veterinarian will perform a complete physical exam and likely want to draw blood and sample some urine. I would recommend bringing a stool sample from home for them to look at too). Depending on what the exam reveals, your vet may also advise that x-rays should be taken. Poor kitty. If Bleu is throwing up consistently (more than 2 times within a 24 hr period), then yes this is cause for concern that he may be ill and in need of medical attention. Also if he is lethargic and unwilling to eat, or throwing up water, then those are also causes for concern. A vet visit is needed to do necessary testing to find out what the underlying problem is so that he gets proper treatment. However, if he only had one or two bouts of vomiting, is otherwise acting normal, and has a good appetite, then I would recommend fasting him (no food, only water) for the next 12 hrs so that you don't continue to upset his stomach. Then after that offer him small amounts of a bland diet (tuna and white rice) for the next few days, then slowly transition him back to his normal diet. He may have just eaten something that upset his stomach or may even have an irritating hairball. I hope that this helps and I am hopeful that Bleu feels better soon. Best wishes and take care.

Hi and thanks for posting! If Haru just vomited one time today, I wouldn't worry too much. However, if the vomiting continues and he is vomiting more frequently, then a veterinary visit would be warranted. I would recommend withholding food from Haru for the rest of the day to give his stomach a break and then slowly reintroduce food to him giving a small amount at a time. Hello, sorry to hear about Cheeto. I would watch him for continued episodes of vomiting or if he develops any lethargy, decreased appetite or diarrhea. Things we worry about with sudden onset or persistent vomiting in cats include dietary indiscretions, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ingestion of foreign material, obstruction or a mass which is probably the least likely in a young cat. If his vomiting persists or gets worse overnight, or if he develops any other signs then I would definitely bring him to an emergency clinic. You should not attempt to feed him today and then offer boiled chicken and rice tomorrow in the morning. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Poor Binx! Yes, this is a vet visit when a cat is both vomiting and having diarrhea as well as being very lethargic. I'm concerning he's throwing up water as well, and that can quickly lead to dehydration. Given how suddenly he's become sick and his combination of symptoms, I recommend taking him into a vet right away. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

I am very sorry to hear that Cleo is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few hours I would continue to monitor Cleo at home. Rest Cleo's gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and provide plenty of fresh water. If Cleo does not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhoea, you notice fresh blood, Cleo seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise taking Cleo to the vet.
