My cat's third eyelid still showing after surgery. Should I worry?

Some cats can experience mild lingering effects from anesthesia up to 24 hours after the procedure. Try to let Coix sleep today and keep him confined to a large crate or very small room to prevent him from running, jumping and playing, as this could delay healing of his surgical site. It is also not uncommon for animals to skip a meal or two after anesthesia, so do not be alarmed if he does not eat today. If his third eye lid is still raised by tomorrow morning and he has not generally returned to normal, give your vet a call to determine if he needs to be examined. I hope that he recovers well!

Depending on what drugs were used to sedated her, this can certainly be normal - many sedatives, acepromazine in particular, very commonly cause third eyelid elevation. If this is the case, it's not a cause for concern, and I would expect her eyes to be back to normal in the next 12-24 hours. If they're still not normal by this time tomorrow, or if she develops any other symptoms you're concerned about, I would suggest giving her vet a call or taking her back in for a recheck to make sure everything is okay.

Hello! Sometimes after anesthesia pets will take a little time to return to normal, and that can include being a little droopy or sedate for about 24 hours. However, if the eyelid is still droopy in 48 hours, you should have your cat examined for other problems, such as a nerve that isn't working or an irritation on the eye. Hope this helps!

Cats with really painful eyes (such as from a scratch to the cornea or something stuck in the eyelids) will elevate their third eyelids to help protect the eye. Though some types of neck injuries can damage a nerve to works in the face and can also cause this to happen. Since I am concerned that this beautiful kitty is in pain, I would recommend taking her to the emergency vet. After the examination, discuss financial constraints with the vet to determine what can be done to alleviate pain but still fit within the budget you have set. Many times we are able to come up with plans B and C to do what we can to help the pet!

This sign could be sometimes related to a systemic illness or gastrointestinal disease. More rarely eyes problems are present. I would recommend to monitor him at this stage and if there are no other signs I would agree with what your vet suggested.

This can indicate a few things such as something called Horner's Syndrome, Haws Syndrome, or some type of injury to the eye or eyelids. It's not likely Horner's because that is usually one eye and is a neurological disorder of the eye and facial muscles. Haw's syndrome is more likely since it's both eyes. This is an odd syndrome of elevated third eyelids and often times diarrhea. Some people suspect tapeworm infestation or a viral cause for this syndrome. It's usually not treated and is most times self limiting and will resolve. Eye and eyelid injuries are often again only one eye but could less commonly be both eyes. If you don't notice any discharge, rubbing of the eyes, redness of the eyes, or pain I would just advise monitoring the situation. I did notice that her left third eyelid and eye looked redder than the right which could mean that she does have something going on with that eye, such as conjunctivitis. I would advise seeing your veterinarian and let them evaluate her. They can take a detailed history and perform a thorough examination. Once those are done, your vet can advise you on a diagnostic/treatment plan based on their clinical findings. Possible tests include a corneal stain, conjunctival scrape, etc. Conjunctivitis is commonly viral and/or bacterial in nature in young kittens. Also, your vet can advise you on a good preventive health care program for Scarlett. Good question. I hope this just resolves on it's own like most cases do.

Unless the watering is lasting more than a day, there is full-on squinting or rapid blinking, redness, cloudiness, or other worrisome signs, I am inclined to ignore it.
