My pet's third eyelids showing after sedation. Is this normal?

Acepromazine is a sedative drug in dogs. As dogs get sedate they will have third eye lid elevation. As the medicated starts to be eliminated from the body his eyelids will return to normal. Thanks for using pet coach

If Landry is acting otherwise normally I would not be overly concerned. It may take a week or so to resolve if related to the surgical anesthesia. If no improvement after a week to 10 days I would suggest you have your vet recheck him. You didn't mention what type of surgery he had. Some cats can experience mild lingering effects from anesthesia up to 24 hours after the procedure. Try to let Coix sleep today and keep him confined to a large crate or very small room to prevent him from running, jumping and playing, as this could delay healing of his surgical site. It is also not uncommon for animals to skip a meal or two after anesthesia, so do not be alarmed if he does not eat today. If his third eye lid is still raised by tomorrow morning and he has not generally returned to normal, give your vet a call to determine if he needs to be examined. I hope that he recovers well!

If you are talking about the pink triangle tissue in the middle corners, this is her 3rd eyelid. They aren't suppose to be showing but will sometimes come up when the eyes are irritated or their is an allergic reaction. I would start giving her benadryl twice a day. I would also have her eyes recheck if it isn't starting to improve. I can't tell for sure in the 2nd picture but it does look like the pupils may be different sizes. Hello! Sometimes after anesthesia pets will take a little time to return to normal, and that can include being a little droopy or sedate for about 24 hours. However, if the eyelid is still droopy in 48 hours, you should have your cat examined for other problems, such as a nerve that isn't working or an irritation on the eye. Hope this helps!

What you are seeing on Jax is his third eyelid (known as the nicitating membrane) sticking out over the rest of his eyeball. I can not say for sure why it has prolapsed. This can happen due to an injury or an infectious process. The nicitating membrane has several important responsibilities, so making sure that it is still fully functional is important. While it is not an emergency, if the membrane does not return to its normal location by tomorrow I would consider bringing Jax in for an appointment. In the mean time, I would recommend obtaining some artificial tears from the drug store and keeping the eye nice and lubricated. Do this every 4 to 6 hours in case there is a lack of tear production.

Your vet prescribed a general antibiotic eye drop which also contain steroids, from my experience when both third eyelids go up into the eye like this, it is usually not an eye related disease, it's more likely to be an intestinal disease. if she has not been dewormed lately, i would recommend starting by deworming her, often it is the discomfort related to the worms in the intestines that is causing this symptom. once the abdominal discomfort will be over, this symptom will disappear.
