Why does my cat's tail puff up after kidney fluids? Is it normal?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

Today we gave our cat his usual dose of drip/fluids for his kidneys. I noticed that afterwards his tail become fuzzy,like when normaly fights. (photo attached) Is it normal?

The hair on the tail and body (most commonly along the back) can stand up with any kind of stimulation. We most commonly see this in cats when they are fighting or playing and are very mentally stimulated, but it can also occur with other kinds of physical stimulation including some internal stimulation (which might be what happended when you gave him his fluids). I would suspect that the hair on the tail will go down relatively quickly. It may or may not occur when you give fluids again in the future.

225ml is not a problem. A daily maintenance fluid for a cat would be 60 ml/kg. Your kitty weighs 12 lbs, which is about 5.5kg. So her daily maintenance would be 330ml. She actually may feel very good now, which is why she is using her scratching post and obviously is not nauseous but hungry. The extra fluid is likely flushing out toxins. So, no , you do not have to worry. Since you are giving the fluids under the skin, she will only pull in what she needs over time. Good luck with your kitty!

Why does my cat shiver when I give him fluids via drip at home?

This can be normal, especially when the fluids are cold. There are a couple things you could try. One is is wrap part of the fluid line in a heating pad. As the fluid flows through this part of the line it can warm up a little bit. If you don’t have a heating pad, you can try something similar with a warm bowl of water. Make sure that neither end of the line is in the water, but a small loop in the middle of the line. I hope this helps!

My kitten's tail is swollen and fluid-filled after car accident?

Do not attempt to drain this yourself. Felix needs to see a vet immediately to get this checked out. It could be fluid accumulating, but he could have an infection or that could be internal bleeding. I can't say what exactly is causing the swelling without seeing him in person, but I would consider this a medical emergency. Please take him into a vet now. Best of luck.

Fluids under the skin will be absorbed as they are needed. They should not persist past 24 hours. If there is still a swelling then it is something else and he should be checked by.l a vet to see what is changing

My cat is hiding with a painful lump after sub-Q fluids. Is it normal?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about George. It is normal to have a lump of fluid develop where the subcutaneous fluids were given. This pocket of fluid will be absorbed over the next couple of hours. As long as you used a new needle to give the fluids, it is not likely you introduced an infection; even if you did, it would show up immediately. The lump will be due to the fluids, and again it is normal. It may feel a big uncomfortable to him for now, and I'd leave him be and let him hide. It should resolve in a few hours.
