Why does my cat suddenly get hyper, arch her back, and puff her tail?

It's not really "excess" energy - it's normal for them at this age, just like its normal for human toddlers to run and scream sometimes for no reason. Just part of being a baby :). She should become calmer as she gets older.

The hair on the tail and body (most commonly along the back) can stand up with any kind of stimulation. We most commonly see this in cats when they are fighting or playing and are very mentally stimulated, but it can also occur with other kinds of physical stimulation including some internal stimulation (which might be what happended when you gave him his fluids). I would suspect that the hair on the tail will go down relatively quickly. It may or may not occur when you give fluids again in the future. I hope that was helpful and answered your question. Nevaeh is likely either playing or something is feeling threatening to her. If you are not super familiar with the wide array cats can express play, I recommend to watch some videos and see if they look like what Nevaeh is going. If she's alone during the day she probably has excess energy. I do not think this is a medical problem. Try having her play with a laser pointer, throw toys or treats for her to chase and try to get her to exercise earlier in the day. As she ages she will outgrow this behavior. Cats often sleep all day then are active at night. Don't try to catch her or control her as when they are like this she may scratch or bite. This is fairly common cat behavior. Many cats become overstimulated by petting. Follow her lead and pet only until she pins her ears back or swishes her tail. You may want to find other ways to spend time with her like playing with a toy together. She isn't necessarily mad all the time - she may just not like cuddling.

She is playing. Usually kittens play hunt like that with their siblings or other cats, but since there are no other cats she picks the next best moving thing....you.. Get a fishing toy (stick with a string and a feather on it) or tie a crumpled up piece of paper on a string and play with her. Set aside at least 30 minutes/day for wild playing with your kitty. I am sure this will reduce the the pounce attacks, if not stop them completely. It is all about growing up and learning to be a predator. This has to be practiced (it is an instinct, not a bad habit) and you can support that. So instead of turning yourself into the prey, let the paper or feather serve as prey.

In reality, unless what you are describing is truly a vicious attack (obviously I am not there to see it), a young cat exhibiting this kind of behavior is simply trying to play. When Abigail attempts to engage in this type of activity, you have a couple of different choices on how to address it. You can simply get up and walk away completely disengaging from the activity. Do not try to punish or reprimand as this sort of training method simply doesn't work at all in cats. The other thing you can try is instead of walking away, you can try to play with your cat in another way. Use toys, strings, balls, whatever makes Abigail the happiest. Hopefully this takes her mind off of your arms and feet and on the item you are wielding. If you truly feel there is an actual behavior problem that is continuing as she gets older, this would be something to address with positive reinforcement training and/or assistance of a professional.
