My cat is hiding with a painful lump after sub-Q fluids. Is it normal?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If you have a lump where you gave fluids under the skin, it is possible there is an infection present if it is sore. A hernia is a break in the body wall, so the muscle would have to be torn open, this is exceedingly unlikely with a subcutaneous injection, even if the injection was not given properly. Without seeing Anano I cannot say if the lump is a hernia (from a cause other than the injection), or if it is an abscess (infected fluid filled area), or if it is just the fluid accumulating before being absorbed into the body. If it is painful at all, and if he is vomiting or has a fever, then he needs to be seen by a vet right away. Also, it sounds like he might need some IV fluids instead of the SQ fluids, as they sound like they aren't absorbing. Best of luck with Anano, I hope he feeds better soon.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buddy. It sound like he recieved subcutaneous fluids. These are fluids given under the skin to help rehydrate a dog. Gravity can pull the fluids to different areas. They can shift after he has been laying down or sleeping as well. They should absorb naturally over the next 24 hours. If Buddy is acting normal, then you shouldn't have to worry. I hope this information helps!

Since Casper is a young cat this can be a reaction to a rabies vaccination if it was in that location. Sometimes cats get a subcutaneous reaction that can last a month or so. It usually isn't painful and will gradually go away. It also could be an abscess. That is a pocket of puss underneath the skin from a bite it cat scratch wound. They are usually hot to the touch and painful. The runny eyes and loss of energy may be due to a mild cold or upper respiratory infection. That will runs its course in a week or so. Soft masses that are part of the skin can be either abscesses (pockets of infection), small bits of swelling from vaccine injections (these can last a few months sometimes), fatty masses, and less commonly in a 4 month old kitten, cancers. I would monitor it, if Bean is painful or if it is growing or changing get it looked at right away, otherwise just monitor for now and have it assessed by your vet next time you are in. Great question! This lump could be a localized reaction to the vaccine if the lump is in the area where the vaccine was given. Other options could be a cyst or a benign tumor. Given it's not painful and if she is otherwise acting normally, this isn't an emergency. Keep an eye on this lump, and if it doesn't go down over the next couple of days or gets bigger, then I would have Poppy seen by a vet. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Poor girl. Due to her age a mass here would be less likely as the cause for this hard lump. This may be an abscess or even a cyst. It is difficult to tell without feeling it in person, however, if it does not go down on its own within a few days to a week, then I would recommend having your vet check it out further. If it is an abscess, then cats typically will start to act ill (decreased appetite, low grade fever, lethargy) after a few days, in which case the abscess would need to be drained by your vet and then KitKat would need a short course of antibiotics to get things to heal well. Otherwise, I would recommend monitoring this for now to see what happens. I hope that Kit Kat's strange lump heals well soon! : ) Best wishes and take care.
