Is sudden cat paralysis from playing a natural medical condition?

Poor baby! I am so sorry for your loss. My biggest concern with cats and sudden deaths like this would be congenital heart problems especially i male cats. It can cause them to throw clots which could have caused paralysis in the other rear leg. It can also cause a high blood pressure which could cause acute blindness. Another concern would be some type of toxin. You could always have a necropsy done on him to see if they can find the cause but sometimes the results are inconclusive. Hi, sorry to hear that Bug passed away so suddenly.My main guess would be that she possibly had an aortic thromboembolism, sadly this is a very common feline emergency and it is correlated to an underlying heart disease. Sending you deepest sympathy from the other side of the pond.

However without having checked her over and without a full clinical history it is difficult to understand exactly what could have happened. First of all, I'm very, very sorry for your loss. Only six days of prednisolone isn't a very long course, as some pets take the medication for months to years - this is when tapering is most important. Discontinuing prednisolone with or without a taper shouldn't lead to hind limb paralysis. Since Parker was so young, one of the most common causes of hind leg paralysis is something called a saddle thrombus (or aortic thromboembolism). This is a blood clot that occurs due to underlying heart disease. While I certainly don't know the cause of Parker's neurologic issues, some acute neurologic problems can arise from blood clots in the brain. Please know that your weaning the prednisolone would not have caused his hind limb paralysis. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

He may have had an injury, been hit by a car or he had a congenital heart defect that caused a blood clot at the bifurcation of the aorta (that paralyses hind legs and hurts terribly). This can also cause a clot in the lungs which would cause breathing problems. Unfortunately most cats with these blood clots die within a short time. I am so sorry for your loss. This is very sad.

Monti have had a saddle thrombus which is a blood clot that cuts off circulation to the hind limbs and is usually very painful and not curable, even with heroics at an emergency veterinary hospital. Another possibility is trauma to the spine which is also usually not curable if the hind limbs are not moving/cold. I recommend bringing her to your veterinarian for an assessment and a discussion re: endpoints for humane euthanasia.

It sounds like your vet is suspicious that something may be wrong with Snoopy's spinal cord. Intervertebral disc disease, infections or inflammation around the spinal cord, or cancer would all be possibilities. If a test for FeLV has not been performed and if Snoopy goes outdoors or has never had this test in his life you may want to ask your vet about this - FeLV can cause cancer of the spinal cord that can lead to paralysis. Otherwise it sounds like all diagnostics have probably already been performed and without further testing there may not be much to do other than supportive care. You could ask about referral to a specialist, but that might not be available in your area either.
