My cat has sudden paralysis, vet tests are clear. What should I do?

Make sure your kitten has an x-ray and you may consider testing for toxoplasmosis. Infections in the spine are possible. Most vets will test for this using a blood culture. An x-ray may also help show signs of an infection. Sometimes further diagnostics like an MRI or CT scan is indicated. other infections of the brain can also present as paralysis. That sounds like a really tough case. You may need to talk to your vet about advanced diagnostics such as MRI or CT scan, or a referral to a specialist. Has your vet done blood cultures? Checked fungal titers? Tick-transmitted diseases? You may also discuss supportive therapies with your vet, such as cold laser therapy or medical acupuncture.

I am not sure of your location, but also make sure to check Dexter thoroughly for the presence of ticks. Tick paralysis can present in a similar fashion and is typically non-painful. Removal of the tick and supportive care results in a full recovery majority of the time. Another potential is coondog paralysis if Dexter has had any contact with a raccoon recently. As everyone else has stated, there is always the potential for an infectious or inflammatory CNS disease, trauma, or a congenital abnormality. He may need more advanced diagnostic imaging (CT scan, MRI) and CSF tap to obtain a definitive diagnosis. Most of these diagnostics are performed by board-certified veterinary neurologists.

First off, I'm so sorry that your cat died! There is something that could cause a cat to go from playing to paralyzed. It's called a saddle thrombus. This is when the heart throws a blood clot, and prevents blood flow to the hind limbs. The cat will become suddenly paralyzed and be in extreme pain. Without seeing Wolfy in person, I can't say for certain, but I can recommend you request a necropsy (an autopsy for cats) be done on his body. That way, you may have some answers. I recommend that you have Kitty reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment since things have not improved. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make kitty feel better. Bloodwork and/or X-rays may give us a better idea of what’s going on. X-rays look for things like large heart, severe arthritis, and (heaven forbid) obvious cancer. Bloodwork will indicate kidney and liver function, diabetes, and infection in some cases. I do also agree with treating for pain. Many times pain looks exactly like what you describe so definitely give the pain medication as directed. An arthritis “flare up” can cause pretty debilitating pain and is high on my list if Quavo is 10 or more. Best wishes to you and Quavo!
