Why did my kitten die suddenly after struggling to breathe and in pain?

Poor baby! I am so sorry for your loss. My biggest concern with cats and sudden deaths like this would be congenital heart problems especially i male cats. It can cause them to throw clots which could have caused paralysis in the other rear leg. It can also cause a high blood pressure which could cause acute blindness. Another concern would be some type of toxin. You could always have a necropsy done on him to see if they can find the cause but sometimes the results are inconclusive. I am sorry to hear your kitty did not make it. I am unsure as to what the problem was but it may have been that he was not getting better from the treatments that were given and he just continued to worsen despite treatment. Hard to say since I was unable to examine him and see him in person. He may have eaten something that caused an intestinal obstruction and he may also have had a bad infection somewhere.

I am so very sorry to hear about your kitten. If this kitten was outdoors depending on your location I may worry about a snake bite if this came on very suddenly. Other possible causes would include trauma which could cause swelling if the leg was broken and head trauma could cause shaking and death with increased pressure building up in the skull. If you want to find out the cause of death, a necropsy can be performed by a veterinarian. If you decide to pursue that option, it is best to keep the body in the fridge (not freezer) and get it to the veterinarian ASAP.

It's really difficult to know the cause of her early demise without having seen her. I will say that it's not uncommon for kittens to be born with a problem that causes them to be unhealthy and prone to an early death. Often times, there's really not much you can do about it. If her appetite was declining, then there must have been some disease that was making her feel really bad. I would not worry about the flies and roaches, because they have little chance of causing a disease severe enough to kill her. It is not always obvious how to care for a cat, but I'm sure you at-least gave her a comfortable place to stay and plenty of food; so I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. I am so sorry that your kitty died. The fact that he had a heart murmur means that he likely died of a blood clot in the lungs which then actually killed him. There would have been no way to save him and you would not have been able to prevent it. It is just one of those terrible things that happen. But he had 5 great years with you and that is something you can be proud of.

Hello and I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your kitty. It is so heart breaking to lose them. Without an autopsy, one can't be certain, but most often in a cat without any other clinical signs, it's usually a bad heart that will cause sudden death. One of the most most common heart diseases in cats is called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. It often has no symptoms. It is often not detectable on a physical exam. I'm so sorry for your loss! Rescue work can always be heartbreaking. I worry that since the mother abandoned the kittens, she may have known they were sickly. They could have had a congenital issue or mom could've been infected with a disease that severely affected the kittens. You could take the kitten to have post-mortem performed if you would like a final diagnosis, but unfortunately, this is something that happens and we don't always get closure.
