My cat has stringy stuff in its eye, but acts normal. What to do?

HI, thanks for using PetCoach! Most cats and dogs that get thick mucous or a hair stuck on their eye are just fine. They eventually are able to blink enough to get the hair off the eye. These animals do not even notice it meaning the eye is open and not red. If Oliver is keeping his eye closed and seems painful then he needs to see a Vet. It could be something stuck irritating the eye or he could have a scratch on his eye, uveitis or glaucoma. This sounds uncomfortable for Gandalf! If you can see an obvious hair, you can try to flush his eye with a sterile saline based eye wash. However, if Gandalf is still closing his eye or showing any sensitivity after you flush his eye, he needs to be seen by his vet. There is a chance that the hair or other foreign material may have scratched his eye, causing a corneal ulcer. Make sure he is wearing an e-collar (cone) to prevent any further scratching or rubbing of his eye.

Oh boy. Felix needs to see a vet ASAP if you want a chance at saving the eye. There could be an ulcer, infection, or it could be secondary to several upper respiratory viruses. The vet will do an exam and look closely at the eye to determine what treatments and pain medications are needed.

I can’t say for sure but it looks like there may just be some fur in his eye. Try to close his eyelid and see if you can get it to move around. If not then I worry it is something on or inside his cornea like an ulcer and I would have your vet take a look at him. ypur vet will be able to flush his out if needed and start him on the proper antibiotics. Clear eye discharge is not uncommon. I would not be worried about this unless the discharge turns yellow or green which would indicate an infection. You can use saline solution or a commercial eye wash to rinse the eyes out daily if he will let you. Otherwise just wiping the discharge away when you see it is fine. I would use a cotton ball soaked in warm water to wipe the eyes and not a Q-tip. They also have pre-made eye wipes for cats if you would rather use that.
