My cat's eye is watering from a hair. Should I flush or see vet?

HI, thanks for using PetCoach! Most cats and dogs that get thick mucous or a hair stuck on their eye are just fine. They eventually are able to blink enough to get the hair off the eye. These animals do not even notice it meaning the eye is open and not red. If Oliver is keeping his eye closed and seems painful then he needs to see a Vet. It could be something stuck irritating the eye or he could have a scratch on his eye, uveitis or glaucoma. That’s a hair or fiber on Felix’s cornea. If you have eye drops at home or can pick up artificial tears or visine at your local drug store, you can flush it off of his eye that way. Avoid touching his eye with your fingers to avoid damaging his cornea. You might be able to push it down to the lower eyelid edge of his eye where you can pull it away by very gently closing his eyelids. Good luck!

If this doesn’t work or if she continues to squint, she really does need to be seen by a vet as there’s no safe home care remedy for an eye injury or infection. All the best to you and Missa. Poor Gandalf. He likely has a mild upper respiratory infection. You can try some artificial tear drops OTC but I am afraid that he is going to need some prescription drops and possibly even oral antibiotics. Watch him closely. If he starts to get lethargic, the discharge doesn't improve, he stops eating or starts to sneeze/cough, I would strongly recommend to have your vet take a look. Your vet will be able to get him started on the proper meds to prevent him from getting worse. I hope this helps!

I would recommend referral to an ophthalmologist or dermatologist, it is likely he will require corrective surgery to improve the angle of his eyelids and prevent the hairs from scratching his eyeball causing pain. It is likely Luna will also require surgery

It could be that some of the hot water splashed into Chimpu's eyes irritating them Try flushing his eyes with cool water to see if that helps. If he keeps rubbing at them, the eyes turns red, and/or you see a discharge coming from his eyes, then I would have him checked out by a vet. I hope this helps!

The pictures are quite dark, so it's not possible to actually see the eye, but this type of case is usually due to a scratch to the outside of the eye, or a foreign body stuck under the eyelid. Scratches to the outside of the eye are not usually easy to see and we often need to apply a special stain to the eye in order to detect it. For now, it's best if you can flush the eye with normal saline. Saline flush can be bought at the pharmacy, or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush the eye 3-4 times daily and gently wipe away the discharge with a warm/moist cotton or cloth. It's also possible that there is an infection in the eye, or conjunctiva that is causing this.
