My cat is straining to urinate, passing bloody drops. Is it urgent?

Poor Bear! He definitely needs to see a veterinarian right away as this can be a sign of serious bladder issues like cystitis, lower urinary tract disease, bladder stones, or urinary blockage. A urinary blockage is a life threatening emergency so Bear needs to see a veterinarian immediately for treatment. A veterinarian can examine Bear to see if he has a blockage and if necessary pass a urinary catheter and give Bear fluids. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor PP! No, Petco/VetCo is not a full service vet, the clinics only do vaccinations and wellness services NOT sick appointments. PP needs to see a Vet today. Causes of bloody urine are: stress bladder inflammation (cystitis), urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine or bladder stones. Prevent her from urination by keeping her in her carrier or in a room with out a litter box for a few hours before the appointment so the Vet can collect a urine sample to test. If she has a urinary tract infection she will be put on antibiotics. I wish you the best!

Have her seen by your veterinarian. You can request conservative treatment and your veterinarian may prescribe a broad spectrum antibiotic for a presumed urinary tract infection without performing recommended diagnostics (urine culture, urinalysis, abdominal xrays, blood work). It may help, however the risk is that the bloody urine may not be caused by "simple" infection. Other possibilities are inflammation, tumor or stones. If Luna should become completely obstructed, this will turn into an emergency and potentially life threatening condition.

She may not be eating because she is uncomfortable or has a fever. I recommend that Julie sees a Veterinarian. They may check her urine for infection or crystals. If she is older they may want to run blood work. They also may want to take an X-ray to check for a bladder stone. If it is a urinary tract infection she needs antibiotics. This is very concerning, and Señora Cheeto could have feline idiopathic cystitis or bladder stones. She has to see a vet now for this, that is the only option. Vets will see pets for emergencies during this time, and this counts. Please take her into a vet immediately.
