My cat has new spots and hisses when picked up. What's happening?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is just no way to diagnose this just based on a description. This may be due to allergies for example. This could also be some sort of infection perhaps. This requires further diagnostics which would be done based on an exam. Your veterinarian would be better able to proceed with the needed diagnostics to try to determine what may be wrong. I would highly recommend you have him reevaluated by his veterinarian since things have worsened again. They may be able to proceed with further diagnostics and treatments accordingly. Good luck!

Sight unseen, it is hard to say exactly what the cause of the spots are, but I can certainly offer a few possibilities. Red sores and spots can have many causes. Food allergies being one of them! It is possible she was allergic to the food she was eating. If you switched foods and she is now better with no sores or spots any longer, then perhaps a food allergy was the cause. However, there are other causes such as a flea allergy, other environmental allergy, fungal infection (ringworm), bacterial infection. The feline herpes virus causes on and off upper respiratory symptoms like sneezing, coughing, and ocular infections. Sores are not typically caused by the feline herpes virus. If the sores are not getting any better or appear to be getting worse, you may want to take your cat into a veterinarian so she can be properly diagnosed. If the sores looks very red and infected, your vet may prescribe an antibiotic. I hope this has helped and I wish you and your cat the very best!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. If it is just allergies then this is not expected to be contagious. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

It is hard to say exactly what the red spot on Artemis's back may be without examining Artemis first, but I can offer some insights. It could be a fungal infection, a cyst or small tumor, flea allergy, or other environmental allergy, Your veterinarian can diagnose these potential conditions with an exam and a few simple skin tests. I would highly recommend having Missy seen as soon as possible for some blood labs and a urinalysis as well as assessment of her wounds. It is possible she has nothing serious, but she could have something like an abscess forming which would need drained and flushed under sedation in addition to antibiotic therapy. As for the behavior, environmental enrichment is a must in a house with a cat, especially if more than one cat is in the household. Always have one litter box per cat plus one, and use Feliway to aid in calming which is available at PetCo. Discuss further enrichment with your primary care veterinarian. I hope this helps!

Pixie could be having an allergic reaction but an early skin infection is also possible. If more bumps appear, or these do not go away with using a mild shampoo bath, I recommend she get checked out by her veterinarian as she may need antibiotics for an infection.

First of all I would recommend to ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. Once diagnosis has been established appropriate treatment may be needed.
